Even though Vail Cienega is not at full speed due to injuries and eligibility issues, head coach Heather Mott still has one of the best scoring combinations in the state in seniors Kassidy Johnson and McKenzie Mott.

Johnson has already committed to Utah State and Mott is an all-state quality setter. Johnson is also a setter on the club circuit but serves as an attacker for the Bobcats. Mott, of course, is the coach's daughter so it is only natural for her to serve as the coach on the court.

Playing the opposite hitting position has afforded Johnson the ability to score and she displayed her talents well in Cienega's 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) victory at Canyon del Oro Tuesday night.

Johnson finished with 18 kills in the match, almost evenly split between the three sets, scoring seven in the first and second sets followed by four in the last including the winning point.

"I think we are working as a team and everyone is doing their part," said Johnson. "We are trying to get where we need to be but it will be a climb and we will get there by the end of the year."

Mott finished with 24 assists but she has played a much larger role than planned. "McKenzie and Kassidy are our hub," Mott explained. "But we have a lot of young player who are doing their part and are filling in. I told them we need to win as much as we can with this group until we can get our full team back and they have responded.  I also never imagined I'd have McKenzie play all the way around but she has handled it well."

Johnson also pulled down 15 digs and senior standout Kayli Riesgo led the team with 17.

On the other side, the Dorados have a healthy set of senior leaders with outside hitter Glen Brumm taking the leadership role along with fellow seniors Jordan Estrella and Hannah Gerard.

Brumm finished with an unofficial 13 kills on the night but CDO didn't seem to have enough passing to match Johnson's play.

"Everything is going well and we are working together," said Brumm. "I think as the year goes on we will have improved because we all get along and are working hard."

Cienega had an easy first set with a 25-12 win but the second set proved more difficult and was tied at 8-8 but Cienega pulled away with Johnson scoring five of her kills the 25-18 win.

The third set proved to be a battle with Brumm coming alive with a kill to make the score 16-15 Cienega. Cienega went on a mini run and built a 23-16 lead but Brumm sparked another run with three scores and CDO pulled to within 24-22 but Johnson scored at the net for the 25-22 victory.

Cienega (6-3) will visit Nogales (1-2) on Wednesday and Canyon del Oro (3-3) will travel to Tucson High.

The first AIA/MaxPreps rankings will be available on September 23.
