Highland doubles as team champ of Chandler XC Invite

There were plenty of repeat winners Saturday morning at the 20th annual Chandler Invitational Cross Country Meet. Five individuals defended titles in six title-defendable races and like last year one school captured the boys and girls team championships.
Rather than Corona del Sol, who doubled up in 2013, Saturday it was Highland's turn to lay claim to team titles in races run at hot and steamy Tumbleweed Park in Chandler.
Highland, winning the boys title with 28 points, did not have an individual champ in any of the four boys races, but managed to edge Mesa Mountain View by one point for the title. Scoring in the meet is different than conventional invites as the top runner by place in the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior races combine for a school's score. Highland took fourth in the freshman race, 10th (sophomore), fifth (junior) and ninth (senior). Highland's placers were Will Daschbach, Derek Weech, Carlin Resendez and Logan Jones, respectively.
Individually, three boys repeated as race winners from 2013. Topping the list was Corona del Sol senior Marcus Wheeler, who shrugged off the energy-sapping weather with a time of 15 minutes, 42.67 seconds over the 5K course. In much more pleasant conditions last year, Wheeler's time was 15:59. IIt was Wheeler's third title at the meet as he won as a freshman in 2011 competing for Hamilton.
"It was a lot tougher to run this year, but I felt good," Wheeler said. "It's a good meet to get the rust off. It ws a good day for us because a lot of our team put up PRs."
Four runners behind Wheeler in the senior race produced times that would have won any of the other three races -- Rio Rico's Oscar Amaya and Carlos Villarreal, Hamilton's Seamus White and McClintock's Emmanuel Hidalgo. All ran between 16:03 and 16:20.
Perry junior Cade Burks, the Division I state half-mile runner-up last year, won his race with a time of 16:27.09. That was two seconds faster than runner-up Tyler Burks shaved four times off his time from the year before.
Corona del Sol sophomore Slade Sumners made it 2-for-2 in two years of races at Chandler. Sumners winning time of 16:6.29 shaved off 51 seconds from his time last year. Taking home the freshman race title was Shadow Mountain's Robby Foster (17:44.01). Foster edged Hamiton's David Nelson by four seconds.
Highland's girls clinched the team title with 24 points to nip Corona del Sol for the top spot by one point. Senior Lauren Ellsworth, an accomplished three-sport athlete, won her race and posted the best girls time of the day at 18:59. Ellsworth h is the defending D-I state champ in the half mile. Corona del Sol's Kelly Naumann (19:25) and Chaparral's Ali Kallner had times that would have won all other girls races behind Ellsworth. Highland's placers in the other three races were Rachel McCleve (fifth freshman), Marisa Kennedy (third sophomore) and Tessa Murdock (15th junior).
Repeating as girls champs were Chandler's Alexis Nichols (junior) and Rio Rico's Allie Schadler (sophomore). Schadler, last year's D-III state champ, knocked 15 seconds off her time from the previous year. Winning the freshman race with a quality time of 19:38 was Chandler's Ava Hamilton (19:38).
