A final wrestling invitational tune-up turned out quite well Saturday for Dobson High.

Polishing off all seven of its foes in pool play  the Mustangs matched up with city rival Red Mountain in the team final and came away a 49-21 winner at the Nate Johnson Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Red Mountain High School.

Dobson produced four pins in the dual final -- Jordan Sherwood (112 pounds); Sam Schultz (130); Ryan Campbell (135) and Jake Allen (140). Dobson won eight straight matches (130-189) after the teams split the first four matches with a forfeit and three pins. Dobson won the team title last year in the inaugural year of the tournament.

"We came in wanting to do well and stay as healthy as we can," Dobson coach Steve Tannenbaum said. "We had some tough matches. One of ours this morning with Desert Mountain came down to the heavyweight match (36-29 Dobson win)."

Dobson had three of its wrestlers go unbeaten in pool play, two of whom are unbeaten for the season - Campbell and Allen.

The best match of the championship dual came at 160 matching Dobson's Cody Barriente and Red Mountain's Bobby Davis. Barriente prevailed, 4-3, to reverse a loss to Davis earlier in the season. A controversial stalling call against Davis in the third period tied the match.  Barriente executed an escape with 15 seconds left  for the deciding point.

Red Mountain also had two wrestlers go unbeaten in pool play. Nick Rivera (119) earned a pin in his match against Dobson to complete an 8-0 run. Bobby Worth (215) won by forfeit against Dobson.

"This tournament helped us" Tannenbaum said. "We finish up with a double-dual with Mountain View and Marcos de Niza next week.  That's a tough way to end the season, but  it all gets tougher from here."

In the mini-individual tournament the champions were Carl Hayden's Ricky Ortiz (103); Desert Ridge's Nathan Covarrubias (112); Red Mountain 's Rivera (119) and  Worth (215); Hamilton's Chris Jaurigue (125) and Dimitri Molzen (130); Central's Samson Imonode (135) and Luis Madrigal (HWT); Dobson's Allen (140), Campbell (145), Dylan Hannah (152) and TJ Thomas (189); Desert Mountain's Josh Wechsler (171) and Skyline's Zack Merrill (160).
