QB Kordell Provchy provides Westview with many dimensions

At the close of each Friday night, a quarterback isn’t always completely measured by the numbers he puts up.

What matters most is the number of victories, and in that regard, Avondale Westview coach Jeff Bowen said he wouldn’t trade this year’s senior quarterback, Kordell Provchy, “for anyone.’’

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Provchy is in his third season on the varsity, second as a full-time starter. He also starts at free safety.

Westview won its first two games and will be after a third victory on Thursday night (Sept. 12) when it travels to face Mesa Red Mountain in a Division I game.

In 20 career games at quarterback, he has passed for 1,879 yards and 23 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. He also is a significant factor when he runs the ball, with 641 yards on 78 carries, with 10 TDs.

“Kordell is off to a good start,’’ Bowen said.

Provchy had a great summer, according to the coach, refining his skills in 7-on-7 passing competition and getting in additional work with some of his receivers.

“His arm strength has always been good, but he’s gotten better with his short-game reads, his footwork, the mental part of the game. His knowledge has really improved,’’ Bowen said.

Depending on what he sees, Provchy has approval to tuck the ball and run, or throw it.

“We script a lot of our plays, but the game dictates what we do in many cases,’’ Bowen said. “We take what the defense gives us and try to exploit it.’’

Westview began the season by going to San Diego and defeating another Westview team 55-41, then came back to Arizona and rolled past Anthem Boulder Creek 59-6.

As for Red Mountain, the Knights don’t see a lot of video on the team in part because the schools are at opposite ends of the Valley, but they have seen enough to get a good idea what the Mountain Lions do. And there is the memory of a 42-26 loss to Red Mountain in the 2012 season opener.

“We want to turn that around,’’ Provchy said.

“I think we’re closer as a team this year. We hang out together off the field, particularly the seniors. We all know what we need to do.’’

Provchy likes playing quarterback, but his future in college may be as a defensive back. He is being followed by several colleges.

He said he likes playing quarterback better, “but I will play wherever they want me.’’

“As a quarterback, I can run a lot of plays. I think I have grown up a lot. I think I can see things on the field that other guys don’t always see.’’

He agreed with Bowen that the extra work he put in with his receivers over the summer has paid of in terms of timing and knowing where he is going to put the ball.

Provchy also has shown improvement in the classroom. He has learned to make sure he devotes enough time to his studies.

“It is school before anything,’’ said Provchy, who lists government as his favorite class.
