Arizona will be well-represented when the Arizona Fall League begins its season on Oct. 8.
Ten players from state high schools will be on rosters for the six-team league that will play games at five spring-training sites around the Valley – Surprise Stadium (two teams), Mesa HoHoKam Park, Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale, and Scottsdale Stadium.
Five Arizona players are on the roster of the Mesa Solar Sox – Flagstaff Coconino LHP Kyle Lobstein (Detroit Tigers), Avondale Agua Fria INF Sammy Solis (Washington Nationals), Phoenix Horizon LHP Jeff Urlaub (Oakland A’s), Phoenix Mountain Pointe INF C.J. Cron (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and Scottsdale Desert Mountain INF Taylor Lindsey (Angels).
The Peoria Javelinas (Surprise) feature three former Arizona players – Phoenix Thunderbird LHP Alex Sogard (Houston Astros), Agua Fria OF Aaron Altherr (Philadelphia Phillies) and Tucson Sunnyside INF Stefen Romero (Seattle Mariners). Sogard is the brother of former Thunderbird and Arizona State and current Oakland A’s infielder Eric Sogard.
Mesa Desert Ridge RHP Jake Barrett (Arizona Diamondbacks) will play for the Salt River Rafters and Phoenix Pinnacle INF Brett Nicholas (Texas Rangers) will play for the Surprise Saguaros. Barrett is a former pitcher for ASU.
Fans should make it a point to check out these guys in person. The AFL offers an excellent brand of baseball.
