The way the girls basketball team from Avondale Westview was playing on Thursday (June 27), you never would have guessed that it was taking the floor for the third time in the last 17 hours.

Night or day, midnight or noon, it doesn’t seem to matter to the Lady Knights.

Late Wednesday night (June 26), they defeated Scottsdale Saguaro 53-45 for the championship of the Blue Bracket in the summer league hosted by Phoenix Thunderbird.

On Thursday morning, Westview faced area rival Tolleson in the Desert Shootout at Glendale Deer Valley and came away with a 39-28 victory. A few hours later, Westview dominated Anthem Boulder Creek 41-10.

“It was a tough game against Saguaro, but we were able to come back today. The girls were a bit sluggish for awhile, but I was proud of the way they played,’’ said Westview coach Lisa Contreras, who chauffeured the players back home in a van after the second game.

Westview got the early jump on Boulder Creek with four quick 3-pointers – the first two by Saylair Grandon and one each by Marissa Rincon and Renee Contreras.

“We are working on becoming a better 3-point shooting team,’’ said Lisa Contreras.

Perhaps the Lady Knights’ main strength is their defense. They make opponents work for everything they get. Boulder Creek, which had struggled with its shooting in the first day on Wednesday, was off-target when it did get free against Westview.

“We are playing good defense, but not full-court (pressure) yet,’’ Lisa Contreras said. “I told them (players), you might be in shape, but you are not in my shape yet.’’

How off-target was Boulder Creek? Top player Darian Slaga did not score, although she did sit out much of the second half while coach Josiah McDaniel got others some playing time.

Boulder Creek should develop into a solid team, but this was Westview’s day.

Grandon, a junior, led Westview with 10 points. She appears to be developing into a versatile player who can work inside or outside and have an impact.

“She has stepped it up from last year,’’ Lisa Contreras said.

Westview, which finished 33-2 last season, appears ready to battle rival Goodyear Millennium for bragging rights in the southwest Valley, with Tolleson also figuring into the mix.

Those three are playing in the Desert Shootout’s top bracket, along with Boulder Creek, Phoenix Arcadia and Peoria Liberty.

Westview will face Arcadia and then Millennium on Friday (June 28). More action is slated for Saturday (June 29), with bracket finals on Sunday afternoon (June 30).
