Thunderbird girls basketball rounding back into form

June 26, 2013 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

The girls from Phoenix Thunderbird received T-shirts for winning the Orange Bracket of their own summer league tournament on Wednesday night (June 26).

But the big reward for the Chiefs’ 55-47 win over Phoenix North comes Thursday (June 27) -- a trip to San Diego for the University of San Diego camp. They will be joined by several other Arizona teams, many of which played in the Thunderbird tourney.

Thunderbird coach Barry Ringel had his team playing in the Blue and Orange brackets in order to get as many games in as possible. The Chiefs fell to Scottsdale Chaparral in the quarterfinals of the Blue and then came back in the Orange.

“We have some players with varsity experience, but there are others who do not and we have to try to get them to fit in as much as we can,’’ Ringel said. “We are looking to see if they are ready.’’

The Chiefs got effective efforts from junior to be Ann Shikles, seniors to be Madison Wichmann and Morgan Barnes, and sophomore to be Ozahria Fisher.

Shikles, a sharpshooter, had trouble earlier in the tournament, but came back to score 21 points, including four three-pointers.

“When she is struggling offensively, sometimes other parts of her game are affected, but that doesn’t happen as often,’’ Ringel said.

Fisher, who had an outstanding freshman season last winter, seemed to be playing more under control. She finished with 10 points, including a pair of treys, and set up her teammates with some nice passes.

Wichmann and Barnes seem to do a little bit of everything. Barnes is a good all-around athlete, also competing in the fall as a swimmer and in the spring as the starting catcher for the softball team, according to Ringel.

“We’re looking forward to this trip, doing some team bonding and then we will take some time off before getting back into open gym in August,’’ Ringel said.

Seven of the team’s 11 players also will play club ball.
