Greenway records third shutout in D-II softball tourney

May 6, 2013 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

Phoenix Greenway’s softball team has posted shutouts in its first three Division II state tournament games, including a 2-0 triumph over Glendale Cactus on Monday night (May 6) at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in north Phoenix.

Can the seventh-seeded Demons make it four when they take the field on Wednesday night (May 8) in a winner’s bracket game of the double-elimination tournament?

That will be a tall order, considering the opponent will be the top seed, Peoria Sunrise Mountain, which has defeated Greenway twice this season. Sunrise Mountain advanced by edging Tucson Salpointe Catholic 1-0.

“Hopefully we’ll be loose. Sometimes we play better when we’re loose,’’ said Greenway coach Ed McQuade.

He said he knew Monday night’s game would not be easy, considering that his team had played Cactus three times and won all three.

“They are a good team, well-coached,’’ McQuade said. “It seems like it gets closer every time.’’

Greenway’s victories were 6-4 (Feb. 23), 11-1 (March 15) and 3-0 (April 12).

The Demons scored their runs in the second inning on Monday night, on Ashley Johnson’s two-run single with one out. Greenway possibly could have scored more, but left two runners on base.

“It would have been nice to have had more,’’ McQuade said.

Fortunately for Greenway, junior pitcher Maddie Creed was on her game – again.

She had a no-hitter until two outs in the fourth – an infield hit by Cactus starting pitcher Morgan Renyer – and finished with a two-hitter and five strikeouts.

“She kept throwing strikes,’’ McQuade said.

The biggest threat for 11th-seeded Cactus came in the fifth, with runners at second and third with two outs as the result of a walk and an error. Creed got the final out on a strikeout.

Creed walked another batter with one out in the seventh, but finished the game with a strikeout and a line drive to right field.

Cactus and Salpointe have to come back and play again on Tuesday (May 7). Cactus will meet No. 4 Tucson Ironwood Ridge at 6:30 at Rose Mofford and Salpointe will take on second-seeded, defending champion Tucson Canyon del Oro at 6:30 at Cherry Field in Tucson.
