Saturday night’s (May 4) Division II baseball matchup between Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep and Phoenix Greenway was something you would have expected to see in a championship game.
Instead, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 2 Greenway met in an elimination game at Surprise Stadium in the double-elimination tournament. Both had lost in the previous round, Notre Dame to sixth-seeded Tucson Ironwood Ridge and Greenway to No. 10 Nogales.
Notre Dame senior right-hander Austin Schnabel outdueled Greenway junior right-hander Tyler Frost, and Notre Dame stayed alive with a 5-0 victory.
Notre Dame moves on to the next round on Tuesday (May 7) at Camelback Ranch in Glendale and will face the loser of a Saturday night winner’s bracket game between top-seeded Chandler Seton Catholic and No. 5 defending champion Phoenix Sunnyslope.
Schnabel scattered six hits, walked one batter, hit one batter and struck out eight, including the final out of the game. Frost gave up a pair of first-inning runs, settled into a groove and gave up one run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
“Those are two of the best pitchers you want to see,’’ said Notre Dame coach Brian Fischer.
“Frost is as good as I’ve seen in the state. We just wanted to try to put the ball in play against him, and we were able to do that in the first inning.’’
The first inning included an error, a hit batter and run-scoring singles by Ryan Scott and Duncan Morfitt.
Frost gave up nine hits, including six over the last two innings, and struck out 11.
Fischer said Schnabel, who has had pro scouts following him all season, has been dealing with strained abdominal muscles of late.
“He worked through it. He continued to pitch, and didn’t pitch outside himself, try to do too much,’’ Fischer said.
Fischer made a visit to the mound with two outs in the seventh.
“I just told him that this was his game, that I knew he was hurting,’’ Fischer said. “He said, “Don’t take me out.’ It was his to win.’’
Hunter Bross drove in Notre Dame’s run in the sixth with a single, and Scott and Morfitt each drove in another run in the seventh.
After the loss to Ironwood Ridge, Fischer turned to his players and said, “Our backs are to the wall, but the pressure is off. Let’s just go out and have fun and play baseball.’’
