Big flies in 1st and 4th propel Perry softball past Hamilton

The long ball told the story Thursday afternoon on Senior Day at Perry High.
One of five seniors honored at Perry's final home regular-season softball game was Jillian Leslie and Leslie crashed a big home run as she's done multiple times in her career that started the Lady Pumas on their way to a 6-2 victory over Hamilton in a Division I game.
Leslie's three-run blast in the first capped a four-run inning and was plenty for Leslie to work with as Perry's pitcher on the day. Leslie scattered seven hits to earn the win, something she's also done with regularity the past two seasons.
"I was kind of disappointed we put on the brakes offensively after the first inning, but it got us up early and may have set them back," Perry coach Kevin Chapin said. "We're playing and hitting better. We need to with the playoffs coming up."
Leslie's homer was her seventh of the season and the first time this year she's homered in back-to-back games. She improved her RBI total to a team-high 30. Perry ran its record to 23-6 overall and 12-4 in power-ranking games. Perry was 15th in the power-rankings prior to the game.
Also playing long ball for Perrry was junior Lindsay Heffron, who missed the first 19 games this season recovering from a blown out knee from last summer. Heffron lifted a two-run shot in the fourth inning, her third round-tripper in 10 games. The addition of Heffron to the lineup gives the Lady Pumas at present five hitters (1-5) hitting .400 or better. Heffron also has homered in back-to-back games and three of the last four.
"It great having her back in the lineup," Chapin said of Heffron. "She's a lightninng rod for us. When she hits a home run she's right back in the dugout hanging on the rail rooting her teammates on."
As far as the pitiching went, Leslie opened the game with 1-2-3 innings in the first and second. Hamilton put pressure on each of the next four innings, nicking Perry for runs in the fourth and sixth. But Leslie got big outs to end each inning as the Lady Huskies left nine runners on in the third through sixth. Leslie fanned four and walked two in her complete-game effort.
Hamilton, battling for one of the final couple playoff spots in D-I, got a decent pitching performance from freshman Cheyenne Noli. Take away the home runs and Noli likely would have been matching Leslie. Noli allowed three hits each in the first and fourth. She allowed eight hits, walked three and fanned four.
Hamilton (14-15 overall, 7-9 prg) will have to win its final two games next week against Xavier and Casa Grande to have any shot at cracking the playoff field. The Lady Huskies, who were at No. 26 in the D-I power-rankings heading to play Thursday, was led in hitting by Shannon Rackoski and Christine Olivas with two hits each. Lexi Pederson had Hamilton's only RBI.
