SDO swings, rarely misses in big baseball win over Mt. Ridge

The brisk wind played havoc with the throws offered up by the baseball pitching staff from host Glendale Mountain Ridge on Monday (April 15).

But not as much as the havoc created by the bats of Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor.

The Eagles, No. 2 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Division I power seedings entering this week, scored in every inning and collected 23 hits in posting a 22-11 victory in a game shortened to six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Owen Sanborn led the hit parade with a perfect 5-for-5 and five RBIs. Jade Bilbrey, Noah Kelly and Greg Saenz each had three hits.

Kelly and Cooper Gray contributed home runs for Sandra Day O’Connor (27-1).

Mountain Ridge (9-10), 13th in the Division I seedings, used six pitchers, but its hitters did not come up empty-handed.

The Mountain Lions had 12 hits against three Sandra Day O’Connor pitchers. Connor Rochon led the way with five hits.

Sandra Day O’Connor had four runs on eight hits in the first inning and probably could have had more, leaving the bases loaded. Mountain Ridge came right back with two runs on three hits in its half of the first.

Led by Kelly’s two-run homer and an RBI triple by Saenz, Sandra Day O’Connor increased its lead to 7-2 in the top of the second, only to have Mountain Ridge slice the lead to 7-5 in the bottom half.

On and on it went.

Mountain Ridge was still in it after scoring four runs to pull within 15-11 at the end of the fifth.

But Sandra Day O’Connor, whose only loss is to Phoenix Pinnacle, put this one away with seven big runs in the sixth. A two-out, two-run triple by Brandon Leboeuf gave the Eagles their double-digit lead.

Sandra Day O’Connor returns to action on Tuesday (April 16) when it visits Phoenix North Canyon, and Mountain Ridge travels to face Anthem Boulder Creek on Tuesday.
