Horizon softball beats Chaparral despite getting no-hit

Even getting no-hit can't stop Horizon's softball team from winning.

The Lady Huskies scored three runs in the first inning on wildness and a fielder's choice on Wednesday night and knocked off Chaparral, 3-1, in a wacky pitchers' duel at Horizon High. The win was Horizon's eighth in a row, 13th in its last 14 games and 20th overall.

Chaparral lefty Dallas McBride tossed the no-no, but came away with a rare loss in such an outing. McBride issued three walks and hit a batter in the first inning. Throw in a wild pitch, a late throw home on a fielder's choice and one of thewalks with the bases loaded and  McBride was in a 3-0 hole after one inning.

Only two runners reached base the rest of the game -- one via hit by pitch and the other via walk. McBride finished with four strikeouts. She decisioned Horizon and her mound foe Wednesday -- T Statman --  last month in one of Horizon's three losses this season. The final that day was 5-3 Chaparral.

Chaparral coach Stefanie Ewing said she couldn't remember being on the losing team in a no-hitter as a player or coach.

"I don't think so," Ewing said. "Both pitchers here tonight have the capability to do that on any day. We just weren't sharp in the first inning, and it cost us."

McBride walked Statman, hit Margaret Stahm with a pitch and walked Kaila Jacoby with one out in the bottom of the first. Katie Gore then hit a grounder to first. Chaparral's Blakely Koziol hesitated and then threw home late allowing Statman to score for a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch followed to make it 2-0 and the rally ended with a two-out walk to Haley Boyce plating the third run.

It didn't help Chaparral that Horizon's Statman was doing a pretty fair job pitching as well. Statman mixed pitches and fanned most of the 14  batters she faced on high offerings.

"She threw more rise balls this time and we couldn't lay off," Ewing said. "It took us to the seventh inning to make an adjustment."

Statman, like McBride, struggled in the first inning. She walked one and hit another, but struck out the side to avoid any damage. Through six innings Statman had a one-hitter -- an infield dribbler that leadoff hitter Alana Anderson beat out with one out in the third.

Chaparral (17-9, 9-3 prg) tried to come back in the top of the seventh. Consecutive one-out hits by Ashtyn Coleman (double), Natalie Cravens (single) and Alexa Thorell (double) made it 3-1 with the tying runs at second and third. Statman got a ground out and struck out Anderson to end the game.

Chaparral entered the game No. 12 in the power-rankings and Horizon was No. 16. Horizon's win should tighten things up between the teams.

"It was scary, I''m not going to lie," Statman said of escaping of the seventh-inning jam. "We've been in a lot of tight situations, but we've gotten out of most of them. We need to keep winning to improve our ranking. It's state (tournament) or bust."
