Desert Vista ends Perry's win streak in boys volleyball

Desert Vista boys volleyball coach Ryan Tolman was expecting a long night prior to his Thunder taking on red-hot Perry on Thursday evening.

Tolman endured a shorter night than he imagined as Desert Vista took advantage of a slow start in the first set by Perry and played a steady game of its own from start to finish in sweeping thet Pumas, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 in a power-ranking match at Perry High.

Desert Vista stayed unbeaten in power-ranking matches at 4-0 and ran its overall mark to 11-3. Plenty of players chipped in on the attack for Desert Vista. Five players produced between six and 12 kills. Leading the way was Drake Moran (12) followed by Ryan Adams (9), Kyle Pittman (7), Garrett Halverson (7) and Brock Wilson (6). It was a huge night for Pittman and Moran. Pittman added 24 assists and Moran chipped in with 20 assists

The key to the night was Desert Vista's run to open the match, especially given that Perry had won six straight power-ranking matches and played well in a tournament in Tucson recently.

"We were fortunate to get out quick and stay hot," Tolman said."They're a tough team, and have played some good teams. I expected this to go four or five (sets)."

Desert Vista bolted to a 13-4 lead in the first set. The Thunder hit a lull at that pointand Perry (16-7 overall, 6-2) began settling in. Desert Vista's lead shrank to 20-17, but three kills and an ace at the end secured the 1-0 advantage.

Desert Vista didn't trail at any point in the second set although it was tighter from beginning to end. In fact, the final score was the largest margin the Thunder held. Perry trailed 19-16 late, but two kills by Adams and Wilson and one by Moran blunted hopes of Perry evening the match.

"We played pretty well," Tolman said. "I thought we maximized what we do well. We focused more on us, not on changing our game or trying to out-think ourselves."

The third set was much like the second, although Perry nabbed a couple brief leads. The match was tied at 20, but from that point it was Desert Vista that made the plays that made the difference. Halverson, Moran had kills and Adams a block and the final kill off a nice set by Pittman.

Perry, which posted a 19-9 record last year and was 12-5 in power-ranking matches under coach Brian Pomerantz, is itching to be a playoff team this year. The Pumas finished No. 25 last season misising the playoffs by one spot. The Pumas were led on the attack Thursday  unofficially by Jalen Cross with nine kills and Mitch Harris and Alex Berghorst with five each.
