The spotlight rested late Saturday on four athletes who took home multiple titles in the Elite Session of the 73rd Chandler Rotary Track and Field Meet at Chandler High's Austin Field.
Mountain Pointe sophomore Paul Lucas, Desert Vista senior Dylan Fischer, Chandler junior Ky Westbrook and Hamilton junior Ashlee Moore won two events each with more than 120 schools vying from Arizona and neighboring states.
Lucas captured the 100-meters with a time of 10.66 seconds and also snagged the long jump title with a leap of 22 feet, 7 inches. Fischer was dominant in the throws taking the shot put with a toss of 59-8 and discus 176-4. Westbrook won top honors in the 100 (11.47) and 200 (23.64) and also ran a leg in the winning 400 relay. Her winning times in the 100 and 200 are the best in the nation to date this year. Moore excelled in field events, winning the high jump (5-5) and long jump (18-1).
Meet records fell in five events. The most notable occurred in boys pole vault where Desert Vista senior Scott Marshall broke a 23-year-old mark with the first-ever, meet vault of 17 feet. Marshall bested the 16-7 posted in 1990 by the the state's all-time best, Olympic gold-medalist NIck Hysong of Tolleson. Hyson owns the state mark of 17-4. Another boys mark was set in the 1,600 meters. Salpointe's Andy Trouard's time of 4:08.28 nicked the meet standard (set last year by Cibola's Bernie Montoya) of 4:08.82.
Chandler girls notched the other three meet bests. The Lady Wolves Sherrelle Jordan won the 100 high hurdles with a time of 13.76, beating the former mark of 13.87 held by Long Beach Poly's Traci Hicks. As mentioned above, Westbrook's triumphs in the 100 and 200 were both meet record-breakers. The old 100 record was 11.64 and the former 200 record was 23.89, both set in 2006 by Peoria's Kenyanna Wilson.
Other individual winners from Arizona schools from Saturday in the Elite Session were: Marcos de Niza's Savannah Whitehead, 12-7 in pole vault; Tempe's Kayla Melgar, 121-10 in discus; Deer Valley's Amanda Conlin, 43-10 in shot put; Highland's Kristi Rush, 5:03.60 in the 1,600; Westwood's Christian Clark, 48.66 in the 400; Chandler's Imani Adams, 56.53 in the 400; Brophy's Robert Grant, 37.85 in 300 low hurdles; Cactus Shadow's Ethan Homan, 1:56.20 in the 800; Cibola's Monica Huston, 2:18.06 in the 800; Xavier's Sarah Fakler, 10:50.59 in the 3,200 and Mesquite's Trevon Myles, 21.68 in the 200.
