D-I/S-III girls hoops: Pinnacle more than one-player team

February 5, 2013 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

There is no doubt that the girls’ basketball fortunes for Phoenix Pinnacle rely heavily on the point production of guard Sydney Wiese, one of the best shooters in the state.

But the Lady Pioneers are not a one-player team. They have others who can shoot the ball if called upon and shoot it well. And the entire team also can play tough defense.

All of those factors were on display on Tuesday night (Feb. 5) in the first round of the Division I Section III tournament at Scottsdale Chaparral.

Pinnacle, the section’s top seed, rolled to a 50-29 victory over No. 8 host Chaparral. Pinnacle (26-2) moves on to the section semifinals on Thursday night (Feb. 7) at Chaparral against No. 4 seed Phoenix Xavier Prep, which defeated No. 5 Mesa Mountain View earlier Tuesday 49-40.

Wiese finished with 24 points, and sat out the fourth quarter that was played under a running clock after Pinnacle entered the period with a 30-point cushion.

Wiese, who has signed with Oregon State, hit two 3-pointers in each half.

Her teammates also shot well from long range. Jasmine Hotchkins, Mandy Johnson, Kenna McDavis  and Megan Glock also connected. Nine Pinnacle players scored. McDavis had 10, all in the first half.

Wiese’s father, Troy, in his first season as head coach after serving as an assistant and the former head coach at Phoenix Horizon, was pleased with the Pioneers’ defense.

“We’re a different-style defense than we have been in the past,’’ Troy Wiese said. “We’re using more man-to-man with a lot of switches.’’

Pinnacle had two previous lopsided wins over Chaparral during the regular season, but Wiese knew Chaparral would be ready to play.

“They came after us, had a good game plan,’’ he said. “They have a really good point guard (Alex Gilligan) and we knew she would be capable of trying to slow it down. It took us a little while, but we were able to adjust to that tempo.’’

To its credit, Chaparral (13-16) played aggressively until the end. It did not give in.

Gilligan finished with 13 points, including a 3-pointer.
