Cibola, Yuma Catholic give their town things to cheer about

It was quite a weekend for Yuma high school athletes and teams

On Friday night Cibola' s football team beat Gila Ridge to win the city championship and in the process earned a home playoff game in the first round of the 5A-II tournament this week against Lake Havasu. Lake Havasu was the team that cost Cibola an unbeaten season three weeks ago.

Also on Friday night Yuma Catholic continued its first-round 2A football playoff success by routing Bourgade, 62-26. It's the fourth year in a row the Shamrocks have prevailed in at least their opening-round playoff encounter under coach Rhett Stallworth.

Then on Saturday Cibola sophomore Bernie Montoya won the Division I boys cross country meet at Cave Creek Golf Course, beating out several veteran favorites to do so.  Another Cibola sophomore, Monica Houston, finished second to Xavier standout Sarah Fakler in the Division I girls cross country meet.

A pretty good set of accomplishments for a town that often doesn't have much to cheer about this time of year.
