PRESCOTT VALLEY – It will go down as one of the most remarkable achievements in Arizona high school athletics in the 2010-11 school year.
Kayenta Monument Valley dominated Class 3A volleyball from beginning to end, wrapping up a 40-0 season with a three-game sweep of North Region rival Window Rock on Saturday night at Tim’s Toyota Center.
The scores were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-13.
It was the Mustangs’ third straight title, and according to coach Lucinda Nash, the team did not play a five-set match all season. This was the seventh time they had played Window Rock, including tournaments.
Nash expected a tougher match, but theorized that Window Rock expended a lot of energy in a five-set semifinal win over Tuba City, another North Region team.
There are eight seniors on the team, including Nash’s daughter, Bradley, a 6-foot player who is all over the floor and arguably is one of the best in the state, regardless of classification.
She was at her intimidating best against Window Rock, rocketing kill shots from left or right, blocking the ball with regularity (including the one for match point) and even adding a few nice soft touch shots for good measure.
“It was a long, hard season. It was about a commitment to a goal,’’ Lucinda Nash said.
