Tough road again for Corona del Sol girls volleyball

For the second year in a row Corona del Sol's girls volleyball team is the 11th seed in the 5A-I girls state volleyball tournament.
Last year with the toughest road to the final, Corona coach Ben Maxfield and his squad reached the final against tough odds. The Aztecs opened with a 3-2 win over No. 6 seed Mountain Pointe, beat No. 3 seed Desert Vista, 3-2, in the quarterfinals and knocked off No. 2 Gilbert, 3-2, in the semifinals. The Aztecs lost 3-0 to Xavier in the final.
This year all the Aztecs need to do is beat No. 6 Basha in the first round, likely No. 3 Hamilton in the quarters and then likely No. 2 Gilbert in the semis. If they survive that, then perhaps another shot at No. 1 Xavier.
Corona played Basha in a pair of regular-season matches and won the second one last Thursday in the regular-season finale. The Aztecs also lost to Xavier and Gilbert twice in regular-season power-point matches.
A No. 11 seed shouldn't have an easy road, but the Aztecs are on one again devoid of pavement.
