It is Week 8 of the football marathon, and there still are some big games out there before the playoff seedings are decided.
Here is a look at some of the top games for teams in Scottsdale, Phoenix, the southwest, northwest and north Valley, and northern Arizona . . .
Goodyear Desert Edge (7-0, Division III, Section III) at Peoria Liberty (7-0, DIII, SII) – Desert Edge is second in this week’s Arizona Interscholastic Association seedings list, Liberty third (Tucson Sabino is No. 1). This game figures to be a battle of high-powered offenses.
Laveen Betty H. Fairfax (6-1, DII, SI) at Laveen Cesar Chavez (7-0, DII, SI) – Betty H. Fairfax would like nothing better than to knock its neighborhood rival from the unbeaten ranks and pick up a few more seedings points along the way.
Phoenix Scottsdale Christian (5-1, DV, SII) at Phoenix Christian (6-1, DV, SII) – Phoenix Christian regained its footing last week with a win over Chandler Valley Christian after a lopsided loss to Phoenix Northwest Christian the week before. Scottsdale Christian probably has played Northwest as tough as anybody (four-point loss). Phoenix Christian currently is the No. 4 seed, Scottsdale Christian No. 5.
Anthem Boulder Creek (5-2, DI, SIII) at Phoenix Pinnacle (6-1, DI, SIII) – Boulder Creek is treading on some soft ground, seeded at No. 15, so a win here would move the Jaguars up and perhaps have them avoid facing one of the powerhouses in the first round.
Bagdad (5-2, DVI, SIII) vs. Phoenix Valley Lutheran (6-1, DVI, SIII) at Phoenix Northwest Christian – The eight-man playoffs begin next week, so one last seedings points boost for the winner here certainly wouldn’t hurt.
Phoenix Brophy Prep (5-2, DI, SIII) vs. Phoenix St. Mary’s (3-4, DI, SI) at Phoenix College – This Catholic rivalry, once one of the best rivalries around, has lost some of its luster with the struggles of the St. Mary’s program in recent years. But the Knights will try to ruin Brophy’s night.
Flagstaff Coconino (5-2, DIII, SII) at Winslow (4-3, DIV, SI) – Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives – Coconino seeded 16th in the higher division, Winslow 11th in its division.
Peoria Sunrise Mountain (6-1, DIII, SII) at Phoenix Paradise Valley (5-2, DIII, SIII) – Sunrise Mountain is seeded eighth, Paradise Valley 11th, so the outcome of this one could be the difference in hosting a first-round game or playing on the road.
