Sarah and Bernie win again at Desert Twilight XC Festival

It was more of the same Friday night at the 6th annual Desert Twighlight XC Festival as Xavier's Prep's Sarah Fakler and Cibola's Bernie Montoya repeated as girls and boys sweepstakes race champs, respectively, at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa.
Fakler, a senior, covered the 5K course in 17 minutes, 34 seconds to win ther third straight individual crown and lead Xavier to its fourth consecutive team title. Fakler also was the runner-up her freshman year. Xavier was pressed somewhat in the team standings by Great Oak High, Calif., but won comfortably enough with 28 points. All five of Xavier's runners finished in he top 10. Great Oak totaled 41 points. Runner-up to Fakler was Ashley Helbig of Great Oak and third was Xavier's Shelby Brown.
Montoya, a senior and competing for the third time in the meet, won the individual race for the second year in a row. His winning time was 15:12. For the sixth year in a row a different school took top honors as Los Alamos, N.M. posted the winning total of (98) over runner-up Great Oak (154). Top finishing Arizona boys team was third-place Desert Vista (209). Highland, Rio Rico, Mesa Mountain View, Alhambra and Mount Brook, Ala. were the previous boys champs. Runner-up to Montoya was Salpointe's Andy Trouard, 12 seconds behind Montoya and third was Corona del Sol's Nathan Rodriguez.
