Yes, there are still a few unbeaten football teams out there, with some even playing each other in this, Week 6.
Here is a look at some of the top games for teams in Scottsdale, Phoenix, the southwest, northwest and north Valley, and northern Arizona . . .
Phoenix Northwest Christian (5-0, Division V, Section II) at Phoenix Christian (5-0, DV, SII) – State runner-up Northwest probably has had a slightly tougher schedule to this point, including a win over champion Yuma Catholic. But Phoenix Christian is capable of putting points on the board in a hurry – the Cougars are averaging 44 points per game.
Phoenix Valley Lutheran (5-0, DVI, SIII) at Glendale Joy Christian (5-0, DVI, SIII) – Joy and other small Christian schools sprouting up around the Valley are starting to work their way into state title talk. Coached by Brian Cole, Joy was a step away from winning the eight-man crown last year before falling to perennial northern power Joseph City.
St. Johns (3-2, DV, SI) at Lakeside Blue Ridge (6-0, DIV, SI) – Some people might think that Blue Ridge won’t even break a sweat on the way to giving coach Paul Moro his 300th career victory, but St. Johns coach Mike Morgan has been around the block a few times and could have some things up his sleeve.
Salome (4-2, DVI, SIII) at Bagdad (4-1, DVI, SIII) – This contest is important in that the winner will have a decent shot to make some noise in the eight-man race. Bagdad will see if it can bounce back from being dominated by Glendale Joy Christian last week.
Avondale Agua Fria (4-1, DIII, SIII) at Goodyear Desert Edge (5-0, DIII, SIII) – Agua Fria’s record provides Desert Edge enough attention that the Scorpions won’t be tempted to look ahead to highly rated Peoria Liberty in a few weeks.
Snowflake (4-1, DIV, SI) at Winslow (4-1, DIV, SI) – Winslow is looking to recapture some of the magic that made it a contender in the old Class 3A, and a win over an all-around solid Snowflake team would help in that regard.
Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep (2-3, DII, SIII) at Scottsdale Chaparral (2-3, DII, SIII) – Both teams have struggled with inconsistency this season, but will need to pick up the pace to be considered a factor in the playoff race.
Phoenix Carl Hayden (3-2, DI, SI) at Tolleson (1-4, DI, SI) – The planets are aligned for a fourth straight win for Carl Hayden, and that hasn’t happened in a long time. The Falcons have combined for 101 points in their last two games.
Cottonwood Mingus (4-1, DIV, SIII) at Flagstaff Coconino (4-1, DIII, SII) – This will harken the days when these two were rivals in the old Grand Canyon Region. Both are a whisper from being unbeaten – Mingus fell to Lakeside Blue Ridge by three points in its opener and Coconino dropped a one-point heartbreaker to Phoenix Paradise Valley in Week 2.
Kayenta Monument Valley (5-0, DIV, SI) at Tuba City (2-3, DIV, SI) – Coach Bryan Begay has the Monument Valley offense revved up – the Mustangs are averaging 49 points per game. They can see a good playoff seeding on the horizon.
