September 22, 2012 by Game Previews, AZPreps365

The Saguaro Sabercats, ranked ninth in the MaxPreps Power Rankings, amassed 380 total yards in the first half and scored four touchdowns in the game's first nine minutes Friday night en route to a 67-14 drubbing of the #13 Cactus Cobras at home in a rematch of the 2011 Division III state championship game.

Luke Rebenzer, who led the Sabercats to a 31-23 victory in the state title game last year, attained "triple-threat status" by throwing for two touchdowns, rushing for another, and even catching a 27-yard TD pass - all in the first half. Rebenzer, a junior, was pulled after three quarters of play during which he gained 301 total yards. Senior running back Kash Robinson notched four TDs for Saguaro (4-1), including three on the ground. His backfield teammate, senior Gena Adams, rushed for two scores and caught a TD pass as well

In its first three drivers, Cactus (3-2) managed only six total yards on eight plays, punting twice and throwing an interception. By the time the Cobras recorded their initial first down of the game, they were already trailing 27-0. Sophomore running back Jaylon James got Cactus on the scoreboard on a 37-yard touchdown run with just five seconds remaining in the first half. His fellow sophomore, running back Austin Marshall, scored the only other TD for the Cobras late in the third quarter on a 59-yard scamper

For the game, the Sabercats averaged 10.5 yards per carry on the ground and benefited from an average starting field position of the Cactus 37-yard line during its first seven drives of the contest. The Cobras remained one-dimensional, going 3 for 10 on pass attempts for just 13 yards on the night

Saguaro heads to Ahwatukee for an important contest against Desert Vista on Friday, while Cactus returns home next week to host Thunderbird.
