No. 26 Tucson beat No. 23 Marana 60-45 at home Tuesday night to move to 5-8 in ranking games and 2-0 in the 6A South Region. Leading the way was senior Destiney Brown who finished the game with 30 points but none as important as the six straight points she scored after the Tigers cut the lead down to 45-41 with 5:33 left in the game. Brown scored 12 of her points down the stretch and the Tigers were unable to respond.
Marana (10-5, 1-2) was led by 14 points from Malaysia Roebuck and 11 from Katelynne Hendrickson. Hendrickson hit on three long-range shots in the third quarter to keep the Tigers in the game but both team struggled at the free throw line with Tucson shooting 2-13 (.154) and Marana going 6-16 (.375) which could have made a difference for either team.
The two teams are battling to be in the group of 16 to take part in the 6A Conference Play-In Tournament set for Feb. 19. As of now, the top 13 teams in the 6A ranks will be shifted over to the Open Division bracket, set for Feb. 17.
Tucson will host No. 8 Sunnyside (10-0, 2-0) Friday night and Marana will travel to No. 23 Rincon/University (10-4, 1-2) on the same night.
NOTE: Brown and Roebuck are also a couple of the best flag football players in the state along with Brooklyn Griffin.
Tucson shooter Destiney Brown has 10 flag football offers from her strength as a QB but the senior also has 1,393 career points on the basketball court, including 30 points she scored against Marana in a 60-45 victory Tuesday night #azpreps365 pic.twitter.com/ftyDp5fBwo
