Archbishop Mitty opens with sweep and crashes Xcellent 25 Top 10

Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) roared into the Top 10 of this week's Xcellent 25 National Rankings by sweeping all five of its opponents in winning the Milpitas Spikefest last weekend.

The Monarchs dominated the tournament that included previously-ranked Presentation (San Jose), and moved from being unranked all the way to No. 7.

Also climbing into the Top 25 were Reagan (San Antonio) and Venice (Fla.).

Reagan swept through the prestigious Pearland-Nike Invitational in Pearland, Texas last weekend. The D-Backs defeated Coppell (Texas) in the finals to finish 8-0 and move to 23-2 on the season. Coppell dropped one spot to No. 10 in the rankings.

Venice, featuring five returning starters from the 2011 team, is off to a 6-0 start with impressive wins over Berkeley Prep and Evangelical Christian.

Mercy (Louisville, Ken.) jumped from No. 20 to No. 9 after dispatching three Kentucky teams - Bullitt East, Whitefield and Dupont Manual. Mercy swept Manual, which entered the match 10-0.

The top five spots remained the same, with Papillion-Lavista South (Papillion, Neb.) winning the Bellevue Tournament and extending its winning streak to 85 to remain atop the poll.

Assumption (Louisville, Ken.), scheduled to play No. 9 Mercy Tuesday, remains No. 2 while Chaparral (Parker, Colo.) and Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.) remain No. 3 and 4. Palo Alto (Calif), ranked No. 5, opens its season Tuesday.

Last week's No. 6 team, Presentation (San Jose, Calif.) lost twice at the Milpitas Spikefest and fell from the Top 25.

MAXPREPS XCELLENT 25 VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS


1. (Last week 1) Papillion-LaVista South (Papillion, Neb.), 3-0
The Titans beat Millard North (2-0), edged Hull Western Christian (Papio trailed in the third set 24-22, before winning 26-24), then beat Omaha Marian 25-21 and 25-16 for the title at Bellevue. Papio's last loss was during the state finals in November, 2009. Next up for the No. 1 ranked team is a trip to Omaha Westside on Sept. 11.

2. (2) Assumption (Louisville, Ky.), 7-0
Assumption swept both Sacred Heart and Floyd Central, improving to 7-0 and running its win streak to 37. The Rockets host No. 9 Mercy (11-0) Tuesday.

3. (3) Chaparral (Parker, Colo.), 2-0
Extended its win streak to 55 matches with a 3-2 win over previously unbeaten Cheyenne Mtn. (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and 3-1 over Holy Family. Next at Arapahoe (Centennial) Tuesday.

4. (4) Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.), 1-0
Behind Lindsey Owens' 20 kills and 23 digs, Bishop Moore opened the season with a match win over Lake Highland Prep, 3-1. LHP won the opener, 25-23, which was the first time Bishop Moore has lost a game to a Central Florida team since October, 2010. The Hornets host Boone (Orlando) Tuesday.

5. (5) Palo Alto (Calif.), 0-0
The Vikings open their season Tuesday hosting Notre Dame (Belmont). Palo Alto has won the last two California Division I titles and finished 36-3 in 2011.

6. (7) Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii), 10-0
The Buff ‘n Blue ran their winning streak to 25 with 2-0 victories over Kamehameha-Kapalam and Sacred Heart. Punahou visits Maryknoll School Tuesday.

7. (NR) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) 5-0
The Monarchs jumped out to a 5-0 record in winning the season-opening Milpitas Spikefest. Archbishop Mitty was dominant, winning all 10 games it played and defeating each of its five opponents 2-0. Next test is Lincoln (Stockton) Wednesday.

8. (9) Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.), 0-0
The Falcons don't begin play until Sept. 12 against Fallbrook, but a roster filled with future D-1 players keeps TP in the spotlight. Nine Falcons are 5-foot-10 or taller.

9. (20) Mercy (Louisville, Ky.), 11-0
Mercy improved to 11-0 with convincing sweeps over Bullitt East, Whitefield Academy and previously unbeaten Dupont Manual. Mercy faces No. 2 Assumption Tuesday.

10. (9) Coppell (Texas), 18-2
After sweeping previously-ranked Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas), the Cowgirls went 7-1 in Pearland to finish second, losing only in the finals to San Antonio Reagan. Coppell hosts Plano West Friday.

11. (11) Barnstable (Hyannis, Mass.), 0-0
The Red Raiders have won 13 of the last 15 state titles in their classification and are coming off an unbeaten season (23-0). They open their season Friday at North Quincy.

12. (12) Los Alamitos (Calif.), 2-0
The Griffins opened the 2012 season with a 3-1 win over Mira Costa and defeated Chaminade, 3-0. They travel to Palos Verdes Friday.

13. (13) Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kan.), 2-0
The defending Kansas Class 5A state champions opened with wins over Washburn Rural (2-1) and Gardner-Edgerton (2-0). Hosts Northwest (Olathe, KS) Tuesday,

14. (14) Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.), 7-0
Beat York to run record to 7-0. The Redwings visit Neuqua Valley (Naperville, Ill.) Tuesday.

15. (15) Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati, Ohio), 4-0
Ohio's defending D-1 champions improved to 4-0 with 3-1 wins over St. Henry and Lakota West. MND hosts Sycamore (Cincinnati) Tuesday.

16. (19) Carmel (Ind.), 10-0
The Greyhounds have yet to lose a game in 2012, reaching 10-0 with a 3-0 win over Center Grove. Carmel plays Ben Davis (Indianapolis) Tuesday.

17. (17) St. Ursula Academy (Toledo, Ohio), 6-0
The Arrows beat Perrysburg, Whitmer and Strongsville and has lost only one game in six matches this season. Next up for The Arrows is Bishop Hartley (Columbus) Saturday.

18. (18) Penn (Mishawaka, Ind.), 9-0
The Kingsmen improve to 9-0 with 3-0 sweeps over Elkhart Central and Goshen. Penn hosts Adams (South Bend) Tuesday.

19. (21) Whitewater (Fayetteville, Ga.), 16-0
The 5A Hounds ran their record to 16-0 with wins over Drew, Mundy's Mill, Union Grove, Marist and Columbia. Next up Creekside (Fairburn) on Tuesday.

20. (24) Xavier College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.), 2-0
The Gators opened the season by outscoring St. Mary's and Westwood 150-68 in winning both matches 3-0. Xavier visits Chaparral (Scottsdale) Tuesday.

21. (NR) Reagan (San Antonio, Texas), 23-2.
Reagan jumps into the spotlight after winning the prestigious Pearland Nike event, going 8-0 to run its season record to 23-2. Reagan beat last week's No. 9 team Coppell, 2-1, in the finals. The D-Backs travel to New Braunfels Tuesday.

22. (22) Marymount (Los Angeles, Calif.), 0-0
The Sailors were 33-5 and state D-I runnerup in 2011. They face a big challenge with highly-talented Corona Del Mar (Newport, Calif.) Thursday.

23. (16) Yorktown (Ind.), 9-1
The Tigers swept Pendleton (6-3), but lost 3-2 to Wapahani (10-2). The Tigers travel Sept. 13 to Richmond (Ind.).

24. (NR) Venice (Fla.) 6-0
Unranked last week, the Indians have defeated some impressive Florida teams including Berkeley Prep (3-2), Evangelical Christian (3-1) and Riverview/Sarasota(3-0). Venice has also swept Cardinal Mooney and Bloomingdale.

25. (23) Cheyenne Mountain (Colorado Springs, Colo.), 0-1
The Indians had their 52-match winning streak stopped by No. 3 Chaparral, 3-2.
They travel to Corodano (Colo. Springs) Tuesday.

Dropped Out: Presentation (San Jose, Calif.), Lovejoy (Lucas, Texas) and St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.).
