The Sunnyslope Vikings capped off their 4-6 season Friday night with a 35-14 win over the Skyline Coyotes.
The atmosphere was set as it was possibly Sunnyslope’s last football game of the season as well as Senior Night and the Vikings knew what they had to do.
“I'm just super happy, we finished off the season really strong, and even though the playoffs are unlikely we kept fighting for the win,” said wide receiver Mack Kump, who played his last game for Sunnyslope.
The tone of the game was set early as the Vikings elected to receive the ball and start the game with a strong push down field. During Sunnyslope's third drive in the first quarter, it ran an absolutely perfectly timed trick play that caught Skyline keying on a different play entirely. Ryan Vanacore for the Vikings took that opportunity to break free and sprint into the end zone for a touchdown.
Running back Aleck Vargas had his way right at the start of the game with big key runs that moved the Vikings downfield and led to him scoring for the Vikings upping the lead 14-0.
On the defensive side of the ball the Vikings were able to hold their own with pressuring the quarterback who had trouble getting the ball to his receivers. The Vikings took advantage of this offensive stall from the Coyotes and turned it into a touchdown with another rushing touchdown from Vargas for the two score lead before halftime.
“We just got to keep doing what we’re doing. We’re being real physical right now and I love it and we just have to keep that up,” said head coach Sam Jacobs when talking about what his team needed to do to finish this game.
After halftime the tempo from the Vikings did not stop. On the first drive of the third quarter they were able to make a play on a blocked punt which allowed them to get in the end zone again with Vargas. Soon after Ryan Vanacore finds Kump for a 50-yard touchdown down the field to up the lead 28-0 in the third.
Although the Coyotes were able to get points on the board with a deep touchdown to Dru Moore, Sunnyslope was still dominating on all levels of the field going into the fourth quarter of the game with yet another touchdown to Vargas giving him his third touchdown of the night.
The Coyotes continued to drive in the final quarter of the game but the Vikings defense was able to hold tight and keep them out of reach to finish the game out 35-14.
Afterward, Jacobs praised his team's energy and commitment. Vargas, who had a great game, said he was thankful for the chance to play at a high level on senior night.
“Glad I was able to do what I love to do and fly around out there. Glad we were able to finish off the season strong,” he said.
