PHOENIX– The San Tan Foothills Sabercats (3-6, 3-4) snapped their two-game losing streak as the regular season concluded Friday night. The Sabercats beat the Bourgade Catholic Eagles (0-8, 0-7) at their home field, 42-0.
Neither team will advance to the playoffs but look forward to an offseason revamp.
The Sabercats made an early statement as junior running back Holden Mikeworth bulldozed the Eagles defense for a 10-yard touchdown run on a 5-play drive that took 3:05 off of the clock.
The Sabercats running game dominated the Eagles defense as Mikeworth ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
“He’s tough as nails and he’s quick,” Sabercats coach Mike Carlin said. “He reminds me of [ASU running back Cam] Skattebo. He gets after it pretty good and he’s fun to watch.”
The Eagles defense had no answer for Mikeworth as he averaged 14 yards per carry. Mikeworth has been an essential piece to the Sabercats offense this year as he finished the season with 644 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Senior running back Vizion Mckee was also a top contributor as he ran for 69 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. The Sabercats senior quarterback, Dalton Norman, completed both of his passes for 19 yards and had one rushing touchdown.
The Eagles saw an encouraging game from sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Steuter as he completed 10 of 28 passes for 113 yards. This was a season-best for Steuter as he targeted seven different receivers with six passes going more than 15 yards.
Steuter was put in a tough spot this season as the Eagles lost their starting quarterback, Eli Salas, to a broken collarbone just one week before the season started. The Eagles turned to the young Steuter to lead the team through unexpected adversity.
“I’m proud to have him,” Eagles coach Chris Crockett said. “He gets better every day and really improved this season.”
Despite being on the sideline due to injury, Salas attended every practice and game to support his teammates. During those practices and games, Salas could be seen and heard encouraging his teammates and giving advice to them.
“It was hard the first few weeks,” Salas said. “I was mad I couldn’t play but I was excited for my teammates and for my backup quarterback.”
Salas was cleared by a doctor a week ago and will resume lifting weights to prepare for next season. He will also start seeing his quarterback coach again, one that 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy used during his high school years.
It isn’t just Salas who will start training for the next season as the team has plans for strength and conditioning together this offseason. They will also utilize Bourgade Catholic’s new track coach to help some players get faster.
Although this season didn’t go as planned, the Eagles can expect positive development for next year.
“We will have 29 of our guys returning next season,” Crockett said. “With this year's experience plus the coaching staff coming back, I really feel confident about what we’ll do next year. You come see us this time next year, I promise you things will be different.”
