The Independence High School volleyball team swept Washington High School 3-0 Tuesday.

The Patriots dominated the court from start to finish, winning 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17.

Independence's strong attacks were key to its success. Washington had competitive moments, but struggled to keep up with the Patriots' play.

The victory marked Independence's sixth consecutive win, allowing the Patriots to build their momentum as they head toward the end of season.

Coach Michelle Monaghan said she was proud of the team and praised its performance.

“They played outstandingly and we just have to push for the next couple of games,” Monaghan said. “They are huge regional playoff games.”

In each set, Washington gained the upper hand by building a lead. The Patriots, however, were able to turn the games around, demonstrating their adaptability.

"That second set, when we started going head-to-head, going point-to-point, we got a little worried," co-captain Samantha Rodriguez said. "But we pushed through it and we came out on top.

Libero Genevieve Delacruz and setter Kayla Morgan played big roles in the match. Delacruz's defensive play helped the team's momentum throughout the game, while Morgan's kills led to numerous Independence points.

Morgan had a total of nine kills and two blocks in the match including a huge play in the third set when she showed off her blocking skills.

"I loved my block even though it was out. I was really proud of myself because I usually don't block big hitters like that but today my blocking was really good," Morgan said.

Delacruz has averaged 6.5 digs per set but had 30 digs in Tuesday's match. She also had three aces and two kills.

"Genevieve was on fire today, not one ball was dropped on her side," Rodriguez said. "She's amazing, and we all love her.”

During the final set the Patriots secured the win by scoring eight points in a row and didn't let the Rams interfere at any point from there. Three of those points were scored by senior Lorena Candelaria.

Senior Heaven Walton added four points in the last set.

As Independence heads into the final games of the season, Monaghan said the team's mission for the season is clear.

"The goal for this season is to win the region and put the banner up," Monaghan said.
