The Dobson Mustangs (2-4) are heading back home to host the Skyline Coyotes (2-4) on Oct. 18.
Dobson is looking to end its three-game skid, which includes its 48-3 loss to Campo Verde on Oct. 3, before the Mustangs entered their bye week.
Dobson's fall break was crucial for the recovery from multiple injuries among their seniors, including running back and outside linebacker Javion Alston, leads the team at 115 rushing yards per game.
The versatile seniors Jordan Menton and Xavier Perez-Whaley are not starting after they suffered injuries in previous games.
“As we come out of our bye week we look to solidify replacements to our starters that were lost to season ending injuries the last few weeks, we have found some replacements and with the bye week were able to get them caught up to speed and improving their adjustment to varsity play” Dobson head coach Bill Godsil said.
The Coyotes lost their last two games, including a 54-21 rout against McClintock at home on Oct. 3.
Skyline has senior wide receiver and free safety Zavier Flores, who produces 77.4 receiving yards along with his other team leader in junior wideout and safety Shawn Saxon (5.8 tackles).
During Dobson’s last game, senior kicker Ryan Zima was the only player to add points to the board with his field goal against Campo Verde.
Skyline senior quarterback Jake Ryne who had two fumbles with 50 rushing and 144 passing yards against McClintock.
Next game, Godsil will start junior wideout and free safetyTremaine Turner who leads the team in receiving yards on 46 per game, and senior teammate David Chase, who plays cornerback, receiver, and kick returner.
“No matter who is the replacement, we still play for each other” Turner stated.
Skyline junior Caleb Wheeler will start for the Coyotes, who averages 63.5 yards on the ground, and senior Keegan Pedersen, who has two sacks with one solo tackle this season.
“Going into this game, I am excited to see how much our QBs have improved over the bye week,” Godsil said.
If Dobson wins this 5A San Tan regional matchup against Skyline, it would play a huge role in their mid-season push for their place in the standings. Dobson sits at fifth place, Skyline trails behind in sixth in the region at 0-1. The first-place team Campo Verde has one win in their column.
“There are a lot of competitive teams in our region but we will try and get the win this week,” Chase said.
Overall, the San Tan Region is a tight division for all teams and the Mustangs look confident going into Friday’s game.
