CHICAGO (June 3, 2024) — In its 39th year of honoring the nation’s most elite high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Cam Caminiti of Saguaro High School is the 2023-24 Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year. Caminiti is the first Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Saguaro High School.

The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community, distinguishes Caminiti as Arizona’s best high school baseball player. From CEOs and coaches to star athletes, Gatorade Player of the Year winners showcase the power of sport, touting an all-star group of alumni that includes Gary Sheffield (1985-86, Hillsborough High School, Fla.), Alex Rodriguez (1992-93, Westminster Christian School, Fla.), Clayton Kershaw (2005-06, Highland Park High School, Texas) and Max Clark (2022-23, 2021-22 & 2020-21, Franklin Community High School, Ind.).

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior left-handed pitcher, outfielder and first baseman led the Sabercats to a 28-3 record and the Class 4A state title this past season. Caminiti compiled a 9-0 on the mound with a 0.93 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 52.2 innings of work. Ranked as the nation’s No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2024 by Perfect Game, he also batted .493 at the plate with three home runs, 33 runs scored and 28 RBI to go with a .679 on-base percentage. He is one of two prep players in the country nominated for the 2023 Golden Spikes Watch List and was a 2023 Perfect Game All-American Game selection.

Caminiti has volunteered locally on behalf of Home2First, an organization committed to providing new and used baseball equipment to underprivileged kids in poverty-stricken regions. He has also donated his time to Read Across America, promoting youth literacy programs. “Cam Caminiti is mature beyond his years and is one of the most talented baseball players in the country,” said Greg Bordes, head coach at Crimson High School. “He’s going to be a first-round pick for a reason. He is super-talented and has the ability to take over a game all by himself.”

Caminiti has maintained a 3.28 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Louisiana State University this fall, but is projected as an early round selection in July’s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.

Caminiti joins recent Gatorade Arizona Baseball Players of the Year Roch Cholowsky (2022-23, Hamilton High School), Logan Saloman (2021-22, Hamilton High School), Wes Kath (2020-21, Desert Mountain High School) and Brock Selvidge (2019-20, Hamilton High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.

As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year also receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have totaled more than $4.9 million across more than 1,600 organizations.
