Never judge a softball contest by the record of either team.

Especially in a region matchup. Especially with Addison Gavigan in the circle.

Facing second ranked Williams Field Thursday night, Gavigan led Campo Verde to an impressive 12-4 victory in a 5A San Tan Region game at Williams Field.

Williams Field (20-3, 3-1) entered the game at No. 2 in the 5A power point standings, but Gavigan allowed just one earned run and struck out six Blackhawk batters.

"Addison is a special one," Campo Verde coach Joseph Delsante said of his ace pitcher.

"When she's pitching we always have a chance and she was great tonight and we knew we had a good shot because of her arm and our schedule. We played in two very difficult tournaments in the beginning of the year and we do it on purpose, because we want the girls to be ready for the region games."

Campo Verde (8-11, 4-0) got 14 hits from eight different batters Thursday night. Kim Kyla and Rylan Renowden each had three hits for the Coyotes.  Anna Zehring drove in three runs and Kyla drove in two. Gavigan also did damage from the plate, with a double and another deep shot that hit the left-center field wall. Both hits came in the top of third inning, when Campo Verde scored four runs and and led 6-0.

It was a sloppy game defensively, with both teams combining for 10 errors. But Campo Verde was sharp at the plate all game.

"That game lasted longer than it should've, but we benefitted from some of (Williams Field) errors as well. We need to clean up some things defensively, but I liked how we hit the ball tonight," Delsante added.

Williams Field was able to put a dent in Campo Verde's six-run lead, countering with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. After back-to-back defensive errors helped put Audrey Reeder and Gianna Kilmer on base, Taylor Sykes was able to drive them in with one of only five base hits given up by Gavigan.

But the senior remained steady throughout the rest of the game. Campo Verde's offense was then able to add on three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the contest out of reach.

The teams will meet again next Tuesday at Campo Verde.
