Tucson High beat Nogales 1-0 at Cherry Field Tuesday night in an early battle between the two power programs. 6A Tucson (3-0 in ranking games) and 5A Nogales (1-1) are taking part in the Boras Classic next week but there is still some work to get done before then.

The Badgers scored in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Maddox Jones with the bases loaded with one out to score Aldo Teilon but David Zazueta picked up a strikeout to end the inning and that run help up the rest of the way.

Junior Juan Hernandez threw seven innings for the Badgers and he gave up two hits while collecting seven strikeouts for the victory. Zazueta gave up five hits but he also collected six strikeouts to keep the game close. Ruben Celaya took the mound for the Apaches in the sixth.

Juan David Vasquez and Ralph Felix collected hits for Nogales while Jaden Leon went 2-3, Sebastian Pino and Teilon had singles and Ramses Mada had a double. Tucson hosts Flowing Wells (0-1) on Wednesday before visiting Catalina Foothills (2-1) on Friday before the break. Nogales hosts Canyon del Oro (1-1) on Wednesday and Sunnyside (1-1) on Friday.

Salpointe (1-1) will host the Lancer Classic from March 11-15 at the Reid Park Annex.
