D-I North pitching, 3-run fourth hands South all-star loss

A dominant North all-stars pitching staff was too much to handle for the South on Sunday night.
Six North pitchers combined on a two-hitter and a three-run, fourth inning snapped an early tie as the North prevailed in the Division I Arizona Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game at Surprise Stadium.
Leading the way for the North was Chaparral pitcher Tyger Talley, who inherited a 1-1 tie when he entered in the third inning and left with a 4-1 lead after four innings. In his two-innning stint, Talley fanned five of the six hitters he faced. For his efforts he was awarded game most valuable player honors. That along with playing for the Division I champion Firebirds last month in their title-game win over Brophy was a strong end to his prep career.
Combining with Talley on the two-hitter were Pinnacle's Eric Melbostad, Millennium's Ruben Rincon, Brophy's Jake Steffens, Red Mountain's John Havird and Mesa Mountain View's Willie Ethington. They recorded 12 strikeouts and walked three.
The North made Talley the winning pitcher by dropping a three-spot on South pitcher Indelacio Romo of Cienega in the bottom of the fourth. Tolleson's Eddie Villa started the rally with a triple and scored the run that put the North ahead to stay on Mesa Mountain View's Sterling Smith's double. North Canyon's Easton Deiters, who got to play the entire game as the designated hitter, doubled in Smith to make it 3-1. Ethington capped the inning with an RBI single. Deiters finished 3-for-5.
Other than a four-run outburst in the bottom of the ninth (yes the bottom of the ninth by the North), the game's scoring was complete after the fourth. All-star game rules allow a full nine innings to be completed even if the home team is winning heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The South's pitching staff was also solid except for the fourth and ninth. Seven pitchers teamed up for 14 strikeouts, but Romo was hit hard in the fourth and Gilbert's Justin McAllister had a tough go in the ninth giving up four runs and three hits. North High's Jose Pereyda single home a run for the North in the ninth and Boulder Creek's West Tunnell knocked in two with a single.
The only hits for the South both came in the fourth inning -- singles by Cienega's Daniel Gonzalez and Gilbert's Taylor Stapley.
