Pueblo sophomore America Cazares has 1,000 career points
January 8, 2024 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365
Pueblo sophomore America Cazares scored a game-high 28 points in a 60-32 win over Canyon del Oro at home Monday night but it was her first five points that put her in an exclusive club that includes her older sister Victoria. Cazares became the sixth player under Ismael Galindo to score 1,000 or more career points and she has her sights on the school record of 1,839 set by Victoria in 2023.
Cazares scored 59 points in a victory over Palo Verde a few weeks ago and that mark set a new standard for 4A-6A schools in the state, breaking a previous “big school” record held by former Pueblo standout Alicia Reyes, who scored 57 points in a game in 2016. The overall record of 65 points in a game was set at the 2A level by former Antelope standout Diane Beecroft in 1978.

Cazares is averaging almost 28 points a game this season and, at that rate, the state record of 2,913 career points scored by former Catalina Foothills standout Julie Brase (1994-98) could be in jeopardy.
Pueblo (8-2 in power-ranking games) will play at Sahuaro (8-1) on Wednesday in a huge 4A Kino Region match. The initial set of AIA rankings are slated to be released on Tuesday, Jan. 9 and the Open Division format is back in play this year.
Canyon del Oro (2-7) will host Salpointe (5-1) on the same night. Pueblo made it to the 4A state championship game last year, ultimately losing 68-65 to Flagstaff and Salpointe made it to the quarterfinals of the Open Division. The Dorados last made the state playoffs in 2018.

In the game Monday night, Cazares scored her 28 points, Sara Galindo had 21, Madison Williams added eight and Asia Clark had five. Only a junior, Galindo has 840 career points and she might break 1,000 this year also.
Madisen Fleury scored 12 for the Dorados, Anna Coleman had eight, Halie Fuller scored six and Lola Donahue had four.
