The Coronado Dons have an onerous 0-14 record, and are approaching the end of this season that they'd like to forget.
But the team's senior captain Rosanna Becerra will have a lasting impact on the school's girls volleyball program for her work on and off the court.
Coronado head coach Alex Smothers explained the influence of her leading by example as an excellent student and her leadership qualities that has inspired her her teammates throughout their struggles this season.
“She leads the team, she’s a leader in every single definition of it whether it’s somebody needs help with homework or if someone needs help on the court,” Smothers said. “They go to her and she makes my job a lot easier.”
Becerra and the rest of her team still found ways to find the fun in each and every match, despite being swept in every match.
“This is probably the best team I’ve ever had, we always had the energy, we always had fun,” said Becerra.
Coronado's Tuesday home loss to Dysart was still an emotional celebration on Senior Night.
Prior to the first set, the Dons' four seniors including Becerra were honored alongside their family.
The match marked the last time the seniors played in their school gymnasium. Becerra shed tears as she was congratulated by her coach and teammates.
“Every practice or game, you make that connection and then it’s next to family,” Becerra said.
Coronado junior Ellie Simon explained Becerra's skill developement and maturity between her freshman and senior seasons.
“Her hitting improved a lot, she also goes for more blocks too, and she really good at defense in the back,” Simon said. “She really tries her hardest.”
Simon relates to Smothers's emphasis on her relationship with teammates away from practices or matches.
“Sometimes when there’s drama within the team, she makes sure to shut it down before anything happens,” Simon said. “On the court, she’s really encouraging, she tries her best to make sure the girls aren’t feeling too bad about messing up.”
Becerra and the Lady Dons will conclude their season on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at Cortez.
Winning the final matchup could become a fond memory of Becerra's and her senior teammates' ceremonius swan song playing for Coronado.
“I always included everybody, I don’t leave anybody out, I think that's the main part of being captain,” said Becerra.
