SURPRISE - Serving was on full display for Valley Vista (13-5,3-0) as the Monsoon ran through the Tolleson Wolverine (3-5,0-1) at home Thursday night in a 6A Region matchup.

The Monsoon came into the game looking to avenge a loss they took the night before to the Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles, sending the Wolverine packing with a sweep, 25-8, 25-18, 25-11.

Valley Vista started the first set jumping out to an 8-4 lead before getting even hotter and going on an 11-point run before a Monsoon error snapped the hot streak. Valley Vista only gave up four more points the rest of the set.

Tolleson did not have any answers for the Monsoon servers, giving up nine aces in the first set alone. Sophomore outside hitter Brooklyn Jenkins was the catalyst with three aces, followed by junior middle hitter Isabella Brewer and freshman setter Kylee De Jesus who accounted for two aces apiece in the first set.

“We did amazing. We were all very consistent,” Jenkins said. “We knew that as long as we stayed consistent with our serves and keep them in, we were going to win.”

The Wolverines started the second set strong, jumping out to an 8-3 lead after four errors from the Monsoon and a blocked spike. The Monsoon, however, showed resilience, rallying themselves back into the game by racking up five kills, three of them in a row, on their way to knotting the game at 12. After a hitting error from Tolleson and an ace from junior defensive specialist Brynn Golba, Valley Vista took a 14-12 lead and did not look back from there.

“When I make subs we don’t fall off that much,” Coach David Chavez said. “Our team is pretty loaded. We have a bunch of good young kids in place, so when they come in, they know they are going to do their job.”

Tolleson kept the remainder of the second set close staying within two points before Valley Vista capitalized on three Wolverine errors with a kill from team captain Olivia Moore, a block from senior captain Elizabeth Moyer and two more kills from Brynn Golba to win the set, 25-18.

Prior to the third set, Valley Vista had a short huddle before taking the court and waiting for Tolleson as they game-planned during the intermission.

“I went out there just to make sure they were doing their job,” Chavez said. "Just to continue to work on things like a glorified practice so to speak.”

The third set got away from the Wolverines quickly, starting the set with four straight errors followed by a violation, allowing the Monsoon to take an 8-0 lead after a pair of kills and another ace from Moore. After a block by Tolleson to finally get on the board, an error by Valley Vista, and a kill by Tolleson, the Monsoon went on a four-point run to stretch their lead to 13-3. From there they cruised to the finish, ending the game on a match-point kill from Moyer.

There was a lot for Valley Vista to celebrate Thursday night. Prior to the game starting, the team gathered in the center of the court to celebrate senior setter Olivia Moore’s 1,000 career assist milestone.

“It was amazing and exciting. I got nervous,” Moore said. “It just feels really cool to be able to complete that and accomplish that in my high school career. “

Valley Vista will be on the road Tuesday to face Shadow Ridge (4-13, 0-1) at 6 p.m.

Tolleson will host Cesar Chavez (4-10, 0-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
