Mica Mountain is using youth to power a state run
April 19, 2023 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365
Led by four freshmen and a sophomore, Mica Mountain claimed a victorious round on Tuesday at the Fred Enke Golf Course. Hudson Parker scored a 1-over-par 37 to claim the individual victory over his teammate Hunter Chen by three strokes. Parker scored an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to help provide the distance over the field.
Eight section champions will join seven at-large teams to form the 15-team field at the state tournament slated for May 8-9 at the Omni Tucson National Sonoran Course. In addition, the top 15 individuals not attached to a qualifying team will earn a playoff spot.
As of the match on Tuesday, Mica Mountain has a huge lead in Section 3 and the program is currently ranked No. 9 in the state regardless. Gregory School standout James Labukas is above the cut for individuals not attached to qualifying teams.
Overall, Scottsdale Prep is the current top-ranked team and the Spartans have won the last two Division III state team championships. Scottsdale Prep senior Adam Miller is leading the state and his teammate Anya Mathur is right behind him. Miller won state titles in 2021 and 2022. There was no state tournament in 2020.
