Top seeds for state boys-girls singles and doubles tourneys

The top four seeds for the state tennis singles and doubles tournaments for boys and girls that begin on Friday April 20 and continue Saturday April 21 at sites around the Valley:
DIVISION I
Boys singles -- 1. Alex Lawson, Corona del Sol; 2. Nicolas Montoya, Horizon; 3. Nolan Bauer, Chaparral; 4. C.J. Krimbill, Desert Mountain. Boys doubles -- 1. Matt Dunn-Andrew Dunn, Salpointe; 2. Corey Rizzi-Wise-Eric Wang, Hamilton; 3. Gabe Cerritos-Michael Brimhall, Mesa Mtn. View; 4. Ian Glessing-Jason Auh, Desert Mountain.
OUTLOOK: Singles -- Lawson is seeking his fourth title in four years. He won two doubles titles (2009 and 2010) and defeated this year's No. 2 seed Montoya, in last year's final. Krimbill finished fourth in singles last year. Doubles -- Cerritos-Brimhall partnered last year and placed fourth. Glessing was on the third-place team last year and has a new partner in Auh. Andrew Dunn competed in doubles last year and Matt Dunn in singles. Neither placed, but they have a chance to change that this year.
Girls singles -- 1. Madison Clark, Xavier; 2. Courtney Amos, Salpointe; 3. Mariely Hassey, Centennial; 4. Lidia Csernak, Hamilton. Girls doubles -- 1. Lauren Amos-Claire Baxter, Salpointe; 2. Maggie Cohen-Scarlet Rush, Xavier; 3. Maizy Porter-Demi Daniels, Mesa Mtn. View; 4. Frances Byron-Kaley Hicks, Desert Mountain.
OUTLOOK: Singles -- Hassey is the defending champ and Csernak was last year's runner-up. Clarke is a freshman, but at/near the top in USTA rankings. Amos, a senior, will make the run for the top interesting. Doubles -- Daniels was the doubles champ last year and is attempting a repeat with new partner Porter. Baxter was on the third-place team a year ago and teamed up with Amos as the top seed.
DIVISION II
Boys singles -- 1. Dominic Patrick, Campo Verde; 2. Jacob Hedderig, Cactus Shadows; 3. Johnathon Olivas, Agua Fria; 4. Petter Hemes, Marcos de Niza. Boys doubles -- 1. Alec Petford-Cody Petford, Ironwood Ridge; 2. Griffin Dales-Hedderig, Cactus Shadows; 3. Adrian Cordova-Luke Carstens, Notre Dame; 4. Stephen Bonhoff-Jackson Lee, Sabino.
OUTLOOK: Singles -- Patrick is the favorite and the defending champ. Hedderig, Olivas and Hemes did not place last year. Doubles -- The Petfords -- like Patrick -- won last year upsetting their top-ranked teammates from Ironwood Ridge. Their toughest competition could come from Bonhoff-Lee, who were D-III champs last year.
Girls singles -- 1. Zaina Sufi, Catalina Foothills; 2. Aleeza Kanner, Sunnyslope; 3. Sara Brown, Ironwood Ridge; 4. Jordan Denesik, Goldwater. Girls doubles -- 1. Marissa Baca-Katrina Domingo, Ironwood Ridge; 2. Kelsie Sanborn-Caitlin Railson, Notre Dame; 3. Rachana Bhat-Kirtana Bhat, Catalina Foothills; 4. Sam Goett-Kate Byrne, Arcadia.
OUTLOOK: -- Singles -- The more seasoned are the top seeds Sufi and Kanner. Sufi was part of the state title doubles team last year and Kanner was the singles runner-up. Doubles -- Baca-Domingo have unfiinished business after finishing second a year ago. Sanborn played on the third-place doubles team last year and Rachana Bhat took third in singles. Both are game to challenge Baca-Domingo for the crown.
DIVISION III
Boys singles -- 1. Max Schell, Estrella Foothills; 2. DeWitt Evans, Safford; 3. Delaney Harbin, Phoenix Christian; 4. Richard Foitik, Santa Rita. Boys doubles -- Brandon McMaster-Ethan Bryce, Thatcher; 2. Matthew Fisher-Jamie Sydnor, Fountain Hills; 3. Jacob Meyer-Troy Parson, Valley Lutheran; 4. Zac Gibson-Tyler Johnson, Gilbert Christian.
OUTLOOK: Singles -- Several of last year's top seeds, including McMaster (2011 champ), are competing in doubles this year. Evans placed fourth last year in singles. Schell did not compete in the high school season last year, but is one of the top-ranked players in the southwest. Doubles --- Lots of experience among the top seeds with Fisher-Sydnor shifting from singles to doubles and Meyer-Parson shooting to better their quarterfinal finish from 2011.
Girls singles -- 1. Erin Cory, Estrella Foothills; 2. Allien Scott, Pusch Ridge; 3. Courtenay Gleason, Desert Christian; 4. Rochelle Skoog, Fountain HIlls. Girls doubles -- 1. Leah Stofko-Nicole Bassoff, Phoenix Country Day; 2. Sami Towne-Gabby Courtney, Pusch Ridge; 3. Haley Stuber-Tana Dooley, Fountain HIlls; 4. Sally Stover-Cassidy McWhorter, St. David.
OUTLOOK: Singles -- Cory is the defending champ with Scott taking third last year. The top four seeds all advanced to the semis last year. Doubles -- Looking for a third straight doubles crown are Stofko-Bassoff. Towne was part of the fourth-place doubles team last year.
