The Canyon View girls basketball team made history by advancing to the 5A championship game for the first time in program history, but came up short in their ultimate goal in falling to Sunrise Mountain 52-47 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"I think a main factor in tonight's loss was our energy. We were not pushing as hard as we were in the first half in those final minutes and lost opportunity to rebound," junior Mia Burgess said.

The Jaguars fell behind early, but despite a significant height disadvantage, were able to claw their way back and led 28-23 at halftime behind the play of four freshman.

The second half was mostly back and forth as both teams struggled with turnovers and foul trouble. Burgess battled on the boards and came up with some big baskets as the score was tied at 38 apiece heading into the final quarter.

The Mustang used their experience and height to regain some breathing room and held off a late surge from Canyon View to secure the first girls basketball championship in school history.

With the team starting four freshman, Jaguar head coach Desirae Carranza and her squad are full of optimism as they head into the future.

"We definitely beat expectations but unfortunately our season ended just short. It will be tough to move on from the sport I have loved for as long as I can remember, but I know the rest of the team will bring it next year," Canyon View senior Avery Spickler said.
