State Updates: 1A-2A boys, girls hoops underway in northern Arizona

1A GIRLS: ROCK POINT 59, FORT THOMAS 35
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Anna Begay scored a career high 36 points and No. 1-seeded Rock Point will have a chance to make it back-to-back 1A state titles with a 59-35 win over Fort Thomas on Friday night.
It is the 21st straight win for the Cougars (26-2, 8-0 1A North), which used a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.
Rock Point won the 1A girls state basketball title a season ago, defeating this very same Fort Thomas, 64-43.
Jayla Wilson had 12 points for the Apaches (27-8, 8-2 1A Copper). No other player on the floor scored in double figures.
Rock Point will play Joseph City for the 1A title Saturday at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
1A GIRLS: JOSEPH CITY 47, ST. DAVID 36
PRESCOTT VALLEY — After two straight Elite 8 losses in the 1A state girls basketball tournament, No. 2-seeded Joseph City will get their chance to hoist a championship trophy.
Gabrielle Jesmer scored eight of her 10 points in the first half, April Neill had nine points and the Wildcats (27-7, 11-0 1A Copper) ended St. David's season with a 47-36 win in the 1A state semifinals Friday afternoon.
Joseph City used a 27-16 first-half run to gain a comfortable advantage, which was needed after being held to only five points in the third quarter by the Tigers (26-3, 7-0 1A Tucson Southeast).
The Wildcats were 11 of 22 from the charity stripe, while the Tigers were 11 of 19.
Joseph City now awaits the winner of the Rock Point/Fort Thomas matchup, which happens to be a rematch from the 1A title game a seasona go.
Rock Point won the 2021-22 state title, 64-43.
Saturday's title game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
2A GIRLS: SAN CARLOS 74, GLENDALE PREP. 26
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Ellysia Cutter had 20 points, Chloe Wiley hit three 3-pointers and No. 2-seeded San Carlos used a 33-4 second half run to defeat Glendale Prep. 72-26 on Friday afternoon.
It is the 30th win of the season for the Braves (30-2, 12-0 2A Valley), which advance to the second round of the 2A state playoffs Saturday and will play the winner of the Leading Edge/Bisbee contest.
Wiley had 13 points for San Carlos, which has won 16 straight. Chastity Steele scored 12 points on two 3-pointers.
Only six players scored for Glendale Prep. (13-6, 9-3 2A Central), none of which reached double figures.
Maddie Caspers led the Griffins with eight points. The Valley team managed only six buckets all day and were 14 of 19 from the free-throw line.
2A GIRLS: VALLEY (SANDERS) 63, MIAMI 51
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Dynamic duo Cheneil Spean and Kaelynn Nez teammed up to score 23 points a piece and the No. 9-seeded Valley (Sanders) girls basketball team advanced to the 2A quarterfinals with a 63-51 win over Miami on Friday.
The Pirates (18-9, 13-2 2A North) have won eight straight contests, including a North region title by defeating St. Johns on Feb. 4, 61-52. Valley (Sanders) had lost both regular season contests to St. Johns this season.
Nez scored 13 of her 23 in the second half, while Spean had 10 of her 23 in the fourth quarter alone.
Valley (Sanders) trailed 17-11 early in the second quarter, but used a 16-3 run to close out the first half to take a 27-20 halftime lead and never looked back.
Savannah Pietila led No. 8-seeded Miami (20-9, 9-4 2A Valley), scoring 15 of her 20 points in the second half, including a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
Valley (Sanders) now awaits the winner of Arete Prep./Phoenix Country Day School, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip at Yavapai College on Friday night.
2A BOYS: PHOENIX CHRISTIAN 82, MOHAVE ACCELERATED 42
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Tommy Randolph scored a game-high 30 points, Bryce Anderson and Colin Cajthaml chipped in with 15 a piece and Phoenix Christian advanced to round two of the 2A state tournament with an 82-42 win over Mohave Accelerated on Friday morning.
It is the eigth straight victory for the No. 4-seeded Cougars (23-4, 12-0 2A Central), which used a 30-9 run in the first quarter to put Mohave Accelerated away early.
Randolph scored 18 of his 30 in the first half for Phoenix Christian, which was 11 of 14 from the free-throw line.
The Patriots (17-11, 6-6 2A West) were led by 6-foot-7 forward Tyson Banks, who scored 19 points in the loss.
The Cougars now await the Bisbee/Horizon honors contest, which is slated for a 5 p.m. tip time at Prescott High School. Phoenix Christian will play the winner Saturday.
2A GIRLS: SEDONA 72, PHOENIX CHRISTIAN 35
PRESCOTT VALLEY — Rachel Roderick scored 27 points, Hannah Burt chipped in with 20 and the Sedona Red Rock girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2A state playoffs with a 72-35 win over Phoenix Christian on Friday morning.
It is the seventh victory in the last eight games for the Scorpions (17-4, 6-2 2A Metro), which used a 29-10 run in the second quarter to put the game out of reach early.
No. 12 Phoenix Christian (17-7, 11-1 2A Central) had won eight straight before Friday's first round state loss.
Nancy Felix led the Cougars with 19 points.
The Scorpions will face the Round Valley-Horizon Honors winner on Saturday. Round Valley and Horizon Honors are scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Prescott High School.
