Points were hard to come by for #16 Desert Ridge and #17 Mesa Mountain View in their 6A girls basketball tournament matchup on Monday night. Not only in overtime - the entire game.
Desert Ridge's Saige Miller connected for the only two baskets in overtime giving the Jaguars a 35-31 victory over Mountain View in a pigtail game at Desert Ridge. Desert Ridge (15-11) plays next on Wednesday. The Jaguars, coached in the interim by the state's winningest coach Miner Webster, visit #1 seed Hamilton.
Miller, a junior, snapped a 31-31 tie on a layup with three minutes left in overtime thanks to a nice assist from Arielle Walker. Desert Ridge managed to keep its newly-found 33-31 lead despite numerous Mountain View chances in between. A Mtn. View turnover and a couple missed shots -- including a three with one minute left -- kept Desert Ridge in front.
Desert Ridge missed a three with 50 seconds to go, but hauled in the rebound. The Jaguars called time with 46.6 seconds left. Miller closed the scoring with a putback with 18 seconds left.
Miller finished with 12 points, sharing game-high scoring honors with teammate and senior Natalie Wletschak. Mountain View (13-16) was paced by junior Savannah Woody (11 points) and senior Sarah Smout with nine points.
A six-point lead was the largest for either team - Desert Ridge led 29-23 with 4:54 in the fourth quarter after back-to-back threes from Hannah Mask and Wletschak. Mountain View battled back with free throws (sinking 6 of 8) tying the game at 29. Walker made two free throws giving Desert Ridge a 31-30 lead with 1:53 to play, but Mountain View forced overtime with the tying basket -- a putback by Mimi Miller with 1:11 remaining.
