The North High School Mustangs defeated Trevor G. Browne 71-47 on Friday night.

The Mustangs are now back-to-back undefeated region champions. North will head to the state playoffs within the week. The team also celebrated senior night to end the regular season. North’s overall record is 14-4 and its regional record is 10-0. North is on a three-game win streak.

The crowd was loud, excited and packed for this senior game. Many parents brought big heads or posters. The students jumped and screamed, showing their school spirit.

North’s starting five were: senior Salavdor Arreola, senior Patrick Ayon, senior Iyon Brown, senior Marcel Calvin, and senior Julian Mirelez. Ayon was unable to play after starting due to his recent injury.

Coach Dana White expressed his passion for his seniors and his team.

“I can’t explain how I feel -- region champions,” said Brown, who plans to play at the collegiate level after his senior year.

The score was tied 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams were fighting hard for the win. North exerted high momentum throughout the game, fighting for the championship title. The Mustangs had a 16-point lead at halftime, 41-25.

North kept its energy high and made the score 48-25 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Brown played extremely well, especially during the third quarter, scoring on a dunk.

North’s players were vigilant about smacking the ball from Trevor G Browne, keeping its lead. North led 56-32 at the end of the third quarter, allowing White to play his seniors in the fourth.

“This game, seeing all my teammates on the court having a lot of fun,” Ayon said in reference to what the best part of this season was.

Ayon was a huge part of Friday’s success, according to White.

North is preparing for state playoffs and hoping to show out even more.

“Now it's time to go to the state playoffs and shock some people,” White said. “Shoutout to our ladies, our (girls basketball team) went undefeated this year as well.”

The Mustangs are waiting to know what seed they are and where they are playing for playoffs. They will know Saturday morning.
