Basha tames the Cobras to stay undefeated

Featuring a prolific offensive attack, coupled with a defense that will run through a brick wall, the Basha Bears walloped the visiting Cactus Cobras Friday, 58-0.
The undefeated Bears didn’t waste any time putting points on the board. Only four minutes and some change ticked off the clock before the score was 7-0 Basha.
Junior quarterback Demond Williams Jr. surveyed the field and found junior receiver Darron Dodd in the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.
“When you come out and score first, you definitely set the tone,” Williams Jr. said.
While still in the first quarter, the offense regained possession after the defense forced a Cobras’ punt, which was shanked, giving the Bears great field possession.
After marching his unit into the red zone, Williams Jr. bought time, scrambling to his left only to spin back to his right to throw a laser to senior wideout Kelby Real Bird for Basha’s second score.
The Cobras could feel the game slipping away. Trailing 13-0 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, their next possession would be telling.
The Cobra’s offense set up shop at their own 29-yard line. With junior quarterback Braiden Lagafuaina at the helm, the offense found momentum with its short passing game and some misdirection runs.
The Cobras used the Bears’ aggressiveness against them, as a slew of Basha penalties found Cactus in the red zone. Senior receiver Gabriel Sotelo then found some running room along the right side for an 18-yard gain.
But the Bears, hungry for their second shutout of the season, tamed the Cobras with a goal line stand.
The game began to get ugly for the Cobras. In the second quarter, Basha’s offensive line started settling in and finding its groove.
The Bears won the trenches, creating huge running lanes and great pass protection all night.
“People take us lightly sometimes because they say we are not the biggest, but when they see us in person they can really tell who the big guys are,” Williams Jr. said.
Basha’s defense also stood out.
Junior defensive lineman Brody Jones was wreaking havoc up front, sacking Lagafuaina twice in the contest.
“I think we got the strongest [defense] in Arizona, honestly,” Jones said. “We are a tight group, like one on one personally. Nothing can get past us while we are on the field.”
Nothing certainly got by senior defensive back Cole Martin, who was flying all over the field making plays and drawing cheers from the crowd.
“They are special,” Martin said. “I mean Wyatt Milkovic, Jackson Browning, our d-line. We rotate. They are all dawgs. They all go. They go 110% and they make our job easy.”
On offense, senior running back Deshaun Buchanan had three rushing touchdowns on the night, all in the second quarter.
The conductor of the offense, Williams Jr., ripped a 45-yard bomb to the left side of the end zone, finding junior Bryson Dedmon for his third touchdown pass of the night. The Bears remained in the driver’s seat on their way to victory, improving to 5-0 on the year.
Now, the gauntlet starts for the Basha Bears. The Liberty Lions will come to Chandler Friday night to prove last year’s victory over the Bears in the Open semifinals was no fluke.
However, the Bears think they have the recipe to knock off the Lions this go-around.
“Our defense is going to come out, we are going to come out strong,” Williams Jr. said. “Our offense has to make sure we start off strong, come out hot, and then maintain the lead.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Basha High School.
