BBB Pacific Southwest recognizes ethics in athletes with scholarships
June 14, 2022 by Seth Polansky, AZPreps365
In partnership with Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) for its sixth year, Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest (BBB) selected two high school student-athletes as winners in the BBB Ethical Athlete scholarship program.
Through community and self-nominations, high school students are evaluated by a panel of judges for their ability to uphold integrity in the face of ethical and personal challenges when playing a sport on and off the court. The scholarship honors these behaviors and their positive influence on others.
2022 BBB Ethical Athlete Scholarship Winners
- MiMi Harris from Mountain Pointe High School
- Michael Dulin from River Valley High School
Mimi Harris was nominated by Coach Nicole Harrison, who shared, “Instead of accepting a win in a dishonest way during a critical game, MiMi Harris approached a volleyball referee who didn’t see the actual play that was called. She told the referee the truth, which resulted in her team losing the game. But parents, coaches and the referee commended Harris's integrity.”
“Harris also overcame mental health challenges with the support of others around her and created a website to provide resources to athletes suffering from mental health issues,” continued Harrison.
Michael Dulin was nominated by Coach Jonathan Clark, who shared, “After losing his mother at a young age, Michael Dulin is a committed young man who gives back to his community, takes care of his family, and is loyal to his friends. He has lettered in three sports while being the breadwinner of his family and primary caregiver of his father. I have witnessed this young man vouch to get his friends jobs, take them places, and even give them money when they need it. He is an upstanding young man, one that I hope my son will be like one day.”
Arizona high school athletes must have a GPA of at least 2.75, enrolled in an AIA sanctioned school while participating in an AIA sanctioned sport were eligible to be nominated for the scholarship. Applications for next year’s scholarship will open on August 1, 2022 at athlete.bbbcommunity.org.
