A new face for Gilbert Christian’s varsity baseball team
April 29, 2022 by Michelene Karadsheh, Gilbert Christian High School
Michelene Karadsheh attends Gilbert Christian High School and is a member of the AIA's student SID program.
Tyler Steil is a sophomore Pitcher on Gilbert Christian’s Varsity Baseball team. Tyler has been playing for 11 years, and this is his first season playing for Gilbert Christian. Though the beginning of the season was tough due to the AIA’s transfer rules, Steil has enjoyed being on the team and building lasting relationships with his teammates and his coach. Though he has been playing baseball for over a decade, Steil still enjoys every moment, including when his team won a “walk-off” game against Show Low High School, 6-5.
Tyler has worked tirelessly this season to improve his pitching skills, and looks up to senior pitcher, Matthew Hershey, who has been pushing Tyler to be a better player during the season and pre-season.
Tyler had made a great impact on the dynamic of the team in his first year. “He has an amazing presence on the team, he always has a smile on his face and is ready to work” says teammate, junior Evan Palazzolo. “His performance has definitely helped the team, especially having an extra outfielder that can play, and an extra arm to pitch,” adds Palazzolo.
Tyler is excited to continue his baseball career for his junior and senior year, and his teammates look forward to him being on the team for the coming seasons.
The team finished the season 11-8, and is ranked 6th in the 3A division. The Knights will face off against the #11 seed (currently Arizona College Prep), on May 3rd, 2022 at 4pm for the first round of State Playoffs! Go Knights!
