This spring, if a section champion ends the regular season ranked outside of the top 16, then that section champion has to play into a spot in the state tournament rather than receiving an automatic playoff berth.
There are six matches scheduled for Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. to decide the final spots for the various state brackets:
BOYS DIVISION I
No. 30 Chavez (11-2) at No. 15 O’Connor (8-6)
No. 18 Sunnyslope (8-6) at No. 16 Basha (9-6)
BOYS DIVISION II
No. 18 Canyon View (13-1) at No. 16 Prescott (9-5)
GIRLS DIVISION I
No. 28 South Mountain (12-2) at No. 14 Marana (11-3)
No. 27 Sunnyslope (7-7) at No. 15 Chandler (9-5)
No. 20 Gila Ridge (12-3) at No. 16 Red Mountain (7-7)
TIEBREAK SET
The Sahuarita boys and girls programs visited Sabino on Tuesday with all four programs clinging to a playoff spot. Sahuarita, playing in Division II, came away with the sweep over D-III Sabino.
The Sahuarita (12-2) boys earned a No. 11 seed in the state playoffs and this will be the first appearance for the team since 2019. The Sabino (8-5) boys picked up a No. 15 seed and this is the second playoff appearance in a row for the Sabercats.
The Sahuarita (11-3) girls clinched a No. 15 seed and this is the first appearance since 2019. The Sabino (11-6) girls also have a No. 15 seed and this is also the first playoff spot since 2019 for the program.
The State Seeding Committees will meet this Thursday to determine the berths for the various singles and doubles brackets.
