The 2012 high school softball season barely is a week old and the southwest Valley has a big highlight.

On Monday (Feb. 27), Goodyear Desert Edge pitcher Cyra Wentz threw a perfect game in a 23-0 victory in five innings (run rule) over Avondale La Joya. Wentz struck out 15.

 The junior has seven of Desert Edge’s nine victories and has 75 strikeouts in 35 innings, according to Desert Edge athletic director Ryan Ridenour.

Nancy Figueroa and Ari Samaniego each hit a home run for the Scorpions.
