Baseball is back: Mesa Mtn. View trims Hamilton in thriller

Mesa Mtn. View's success rate in baseball over the years againt Hamilton has not been very high.

So even though Friday afternoon's season opener for both teams was a non-power-point affair, it was a welcome sight for Toros coach Mike Thiel.

"Usually when we play them it's the other way around," Thiel said about Mountain View's come-from-behind 5-4 victory. "We have had some good games with them.  We just haven't come out on top very often."

Mountain View had dropped its last six games against Hamilton and nine of the past 11 dating back to 2008. Three of those losses eliminated Mountain View from the state tournament. None was more crushing than last year's 4-3 loss to the Huskies in the second round.

Mountain View prevailed Friday in the firsrt-round of the 13th annual Desert Vista Invitational, rallying from a 4-1 deficit by scoring twice in the top of the sixth and two times in the seventh.

A chopper off the bat of Mountain View's Tyler Traasdahl with two outs and the bases loaded was not handled by Hamilton third baseman Mitch Nay, who had a hand defensively in eliminating the Toros from the 2011 state tournament with a pair of nifty plays. Mountain View scored the winning run off of Traasdahl's chopper. Just before that misplay a passed ball by catcher Kyle Pechloff allowed the Toros to plate the tying run.

"It was weird," Hamilton coach Mike Woods said. "We had made every play, and some really good ones to that point. I think Mitch makes that play nine out of 10 times."

Hamilton, indeed, had  played flawless, if not spectacular defense,  for six-plus innings. Shortstop Trent Goodrich made a trio of great plays -- one in the fourth and two in the sixth. The last one in the sixth on short-hop came with two runners on. Goodrich also excelled at the plate going 2-for-2 with two walks in the leadoff spot an drove in a run. Cody Bellinger also had two hits for Hamilton.

Mountain View was down to its last out with nobody on in the seventh after Pechloff denied Mountain View leadoff hitter Ronnie Adair a hit on what looked to be a perfect bunt. Pechloff pounced on the bunt and made a perfect throw to nipe Adair at first. A bad-hop single by Zac Hyzdu (2-for-4), three consecutive walks, the passed ball and Nay's error resulted in the Toros completing their game-winning rally.

Mountain View's Willie Ethington and Nay brought a host of scouts to Desert Vista. Ethington, a shortstop and pitcher, had three hits -- a single, double and two-run homer in the sixth--  that pulled Mountain View within 4-3. Ethington pitched one inning of scoreless relief to get the win.

Nay packs a  power bat and great glov. Nay was 0-for-3 with a walk and long fly out to right.

Sterling Smith picked up the save for Mountaiin View, posting two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh. At the plate Smith drew three walks and scored three runs.
