Being one of GCS’ starters for the varsity boys basketball team takes an exceptional amount of dedication, focus, and responsibility, but Keon Talgo exceeds these expectations! This can be seen through his immense improvement throughout the 10 years he has played basketball. He has not only played for the school but on many club teams helping him constantly set, meet, and set more goals for himself to help him get better.
Keon grew up with a love of basketball. This has driven him to push himself harder every time he plays and is shown by the striking differences between his playing last season and now, which is outstanding! As a freshman Keon was averaging 6.6 points per game, but now; Keon tells us he is, “always going hard in practice, and finally doing more training after practice,” and this has brought up his average to 12.6 points per game. Not only this, but since the beginning of the season, he has seen everyone on the team push themselves, giving him the extra drive with his team to set goals to be among the top 10 in the rankings, win the region, and lastly, make it to the state playoffs. Nothing is stopping him from working diligently to reach these goals.
Throughout the years Keon has played he has learned to make the most of it and tries to enjoy himself during practices. Learning to make things like practice and competition fun is a vital key. For instance, during competitions Keon states he enjoys the “long time put into preparation and practice as it surely pays off in the long run when playing against strong talent,” In addition, he goes on to say how he appreciates the high stakes environment atmosphere that occurs at the beginning of a game when everyone is focused on the game itself.
This season Keon has had so many accomplishments, one of which being his game against Eastmark. He ended that game with 15 points and 5 rebounds. During this season’s play, he realized that, “shooting isn't the only aspect of the game and that there are many other ways to have an impact on the game.” Coming to this realization helped him achieve one of his goals of coming closer as a team by learning to work with them and not as an individual. Seeing all of the improvement throughout Keon's basketball career is astonishing and displays how diligent of a worker he is.
