The Undefeated Titans Fall
November 13, 2021 by Caleb Gottry, Chandler Preparatory Academy
The undefeated Chandler Prep Titans at long last, met their match in the 2A state championship matchup against the Eagles from Phoenix Country Day School. After three sets of play the Titans had to be satisfied with the runner-up title. The season did not depend on this win for the Titans but rather, as senior Mia Evers put it, “the team chemistry, doing team bonding activities, and playing together” were the highlights of the season.
PCDS trounced Chandler Prep in set one, taking advantage of their height to block Titan attacks. The Eagles were led by phenom freshmen Teraya Sigler and Quincy Rodin, the latter of which finished off the set with a 12-point service run making the final score 25-7.
In the second set, the Titans were more aggressive offensively, serving three aces and tying the score ten times. Yet, the Eagles were able to take advantage of a few attack errors late in the game and come out with a 25-20 second set victory.
The Titans led for the majority of the third set, learning to adjust and find the holes in the Eagles’ defense. Senior Mia Evers was clearly the star of set three for the Titans with eight kills and a four-point service run with one ace. The Eagles tied the set up at 21 and squeaked out their final win 25-22 to claim the championship title. Titan Head Coach Jones reflected on the season:
“Highlights of the season: we won a region championship again, the girls made it to the state championship, we had an undefeated regular season. Those are all great highlights. PCDS has some amazing hitters. Their freshman outside hitters that are doing what they are doing are just amazing, so it’s tough to combat that. The girls fought hard those last few sets and gave it everything they had and I’m nothing but proud of them for what they did.”
In regular season, the Chandler Prep Titans won 13 games in straight sets and were undefeated. Senior setter Alyssa Smith finished her season with the most aces and the third most assists statewide and sophomore libero Juliet Mason finished in the top ten for digs. Varsity starters Juliet Mason and juniors Ashlynn Unruh and Zoe Yates look to lead the team to another state championship appearance next year when the Titans return to the court. Titan Up.
