Before Monday’s game, all four of the Williams Field volleyball team's seniors were honored as part of the teams Senior Night, but the Black Hawks were defeated by Campo Verde, 3-0.
The Williams Field gym was full of energy prior to the game with families pouring in to celebrate their senior athletes. The Black Hawks had four seniors on the team: Kaylee Runyon, Jordan Ebner, Jaelynn Shurley and Madisyn Martineau.
“It’s very emotional," Williams Field coach Brian Hiapo said when talking about celebrating his seniors before the game.
One of the captains, junior Brianna McClimans, added, “Our seniors have inspired us this year to just work hard every play and to just put it all out on the floor and we have just bonded so much this year.”
The team wanted to win for their seniors and fought hard all night, as the first and last sets were decided by only three and four points.

The Black Hawks were led by freshman Isabella Reyes, who had a total of 15 kills combined. The team was unable to pull together streaks of points as they were fighting to keep it close each set.
The team struggled with self-inflicted wounds throughout the night, as there were several points scored by their own mistakes rather than making Campo Verde earn them.
On the other side, Campo Verde’s Addison Haluska was too much for Williams Field to handle, as she had nearly 20 kills including multiple vicious spikes, making sure her presence was felt all night.

Campo Verde looked like the better team overall, displaying solid communication and teamwork. They were also able to get points and defense from all of the starters and some great performances from some of the players coming off the bench.
Even though it was a road game, the Campo Verde team had a strong student section in the stands bringing a ton of energy for the team. All game, the student sections were going back and forth with chants.

It was a tough loss for the Black Hawks as they really wanted to get the win for their seniors. After the game emotions were once again high as the seniors were getting hugs from their families.
I talked to freshman Isabella Reyes about what it was like seeing the Seniors honored, “ It was hard, it was really hard, I grew really close to the seniors over the past few months so it was kind of heartbreaking to not get the win and let them down.”
“I can tell that they put their all into it and that's all I can ask from them, i'm very grateful or my teammates and I am sad because it is my last time playing with them but I am very proud of how they played and the way we all came together," senior Jordan Ebner said after the game.
As for the Williams Field volleyball team, they fall to 10-10 on the season and just have one more game scheduled for Tuesday against Higley.
A balanced record is the perfect showing for the season the Black Hawks had, as they will deeply miss their seniors but it was a great experience for their younger players and will look to keep improving into next year.
